Hi, I just ordered myself a base model M4 Mac Mini. All I need now is an external nvme drive. Can anyone recommend me a decent enclosure please that I can leave permanently plugged into one of the usbc ports. Thanks.

What's the benefits of the thunderbolt 4 ones that are £60+ over normal usb c?
Speed.

USBC ones for the most part will be 10gbps. The odd one will be 20gbps, as will tb3. Tb4 will be 40gbps.

As to whether you need that extra speed or want your nvme heating up unnecessarily....up to you!

Any recommendations on Tb4 enclosures? The Acasis seems popular but transfer speeds seem hit and miss from some reviews.

Never bought or even tested one tbh. Just too pricey for my needs!

I would buy the U-green one that is £70 at the moment. I've bought many of their products and never had any issue.

It's USB4 as opposed to TB4, but that will still work as the TB4 ports on new macs are also USB4.0.

Unless I get the M4 Pro (unlikely), then the Ugreen one should be the one to go for as you are not going to utilise faster transfer rate anyway.

But I find the £16 one hard to beat for value.

I tried a couple of the cheaper ones and returned them because the throughput was frankly, pants.

Got an ACASIS 40Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure instead and it flies.

Same here. I bought that UGreen 40Gbps enclosure to use with the MBP and Logic Pro etc.

Tried a few cheaper ones and their throughput bottlenecks the drives, so pants for adding storage that needs to be quick.

Nice little fan on mine that's pretty much silent and keeps things chilly too.

No fan on mine but I fitted a huge heatsink. It's actually underneath my desk so totally invisible and it stays barely above room temperature.

Do you have a IR temperature sensor gun then to see the temperature without that massive heating.

The UGreen has a fan, good for cooling but add noise, passive would be preferred but depends on heat.

Yes.
But that was well over a year ago, I have no idea what it was before other than hot.
And now it's barely above room temperature and it's utterly silent.

So the stock enclosure is inadequate.

What is the exact dimension of the enclosure? If I were to do this, I want a heatsink closer to the size of the unit.
