Hi guys.

I was just wondering what software would be best to recover data from a windows boot sector.

I changed cases over and started using an ssd. Wiped one hdd which works fine as it was formatted. The second however appears in disk management and shows up in 'My Computer', however when I try to access it, an error message appears and asks me to format the drive (which I cant because I need the files on the drive). Another error message comes up saying to make sure drivers are up to date, however wont let me click on the update drivers option.

I could be completely wrong with what I think is wrong with it, so any idea's you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I'm not very familiar with Linux.

I can create the live CD and boot from it, but how would I go about copying it over to another location from within linux?

Thanks for the quick reply!

If you can't access and copy the files using a live cd, a few other possibilities come to mind - if you're still having trouble then suggest you post (or describe) what disk management is showing.

It runs from the CD.

just open the file manager and you'll see your other drives listed.

double click on the drive to "mount" it

you can then open that drive and search through it for the files and folders that you can copy across to another drive or to an external usb connected device.

very handy for when people have OS and data running from a large drive that refuses to boot :)

it can also bypass the normal user file permissions malarky you get when mounting a drive into another windows based system for data recovery :)

Give Hirens Boot CD a try. I know next to nothing about linux aswell, but this has pulled data from drives that windows based programs could not even see.
