*** Red Alert 3 ***

Just tried to install this at a mates house so we could have a LAN, it needs the ****ing internet to install, what is up with that.

I am taking this game back and am going to download it illegall. screw you EA. I buy all my games legally, why do you have to punish legit users.

Fully star any swearing

I honestly can't believe people like it, I mean, I really can't.

The campaigns are good, epic battles because of a Co-commander?

From start to finish I basically witnessed no attacks on my base past a couple tanks at a time. 90% of the levels they really only defended. The maps are TINY, theres very little contesting for ORE mid map or anything, no strategic points worth fighting over. They sit in their base, don't build up an army and do nothing. Its incredibly basic, easy, way to fast, and the story is awful. I love the FMV's in the early games but these had a crap story behind them, which made them crap.

it chops and changes in an instant with no build up, it would be hard to explain without massive spoilers. The first few games, the entire game from first mission to last is building up a war piece by piece to a finale. Winning that first almost end of war battle, struggling to take back piece of land by piece of land, securing some kind of technology to help you, gaining support for this that or the other, rescuing bases on the brink of being destroyed, stopping research being stolen, stopping nukes from being taken.

THeres was just nothing like that in this game, not even really one mission with a small part of the story like that.

I'd enjoy a run through the first game again than this pile of tripe. ITs probably got better/more fun units that CNC3, but then everything since Generals has been pretty awful.

I think the co-commander was maybe a nice idea for one or two missions, but it was a case of "we've had an idea, lets put it in where ever we can since its our only new(ish) idea". it just made it too easy, it largely stopped you having to defend your base as you can simply have them attack and draw all the fire. Its far to simple and not a single mission was remotely difficult. Even the solo commando using missions were so so basic and easy. I remember the old ones, which were far far harder and more complex, working out patrol patterns on some, working out exactly who to kill and in what order sometimes. These, just felt like console dumbed down turdity, big boxes over every target telling you exactly what to do and having non player controlled people that do most of it themselves, frankly all those missions are utterly pathetic and a poor excuse for filler missions.

THe thing thats most dissappointing is the units are FAR improved over CNC3, some are just downright fun to use though its such zerg tactics that it was more about numbers than controlling your units well. Almost back to the Prism tank level of fun but not quite. But with far more "fun" units, and I think the ability for more variety, the ridiculously easy missions and really not engaging story thats also far to short with too many led by a carrot style commando missions the good units were just wasted.

Graphically it was technically up to scratch, purdy lighting and water, but style wise. Flat flat flat, roads, terraine, buildings, tree's, everything was bright and utterly uninspired. awful design with a pretty sheen ontop, not nearly good enough.

Actually I have to agree with you there, the campaign is shooting all over the place, in every other game as you say its a battle by battle progression.

the first ones were so good, even the map pre mission and the slight ability to change what you're doing, the map changed, you got the feeling you were doing something. The changes in the story were all sudden, out of no where and didn't grab your attention because you never had to build up to that big fight.

I mean the last few missions in most C&C games, especially pre Generals, were in the region of what, 2-4 hours long, maybe longer. The final mission, meh, its not really a spoiler its a 30minute long mission, no more no less. Epic? Epic? It actually made me laugh when I read that.

Massive map with lots of water, multiple islands to take, defending of base, slowly building up attack forces, flanking the enemy, taking out support area's, power, etc, etc. Nothing even remotely close to that in this game, epic, jeez :(

When the best thing in the game is about 4 quick views of a short skirt thats not that short and really shows nothing at all, you know its a stinker.

For the people experiancing long pauses during the menus and stuff, i have found that's the game trying to log into the servers and failing... just takes a while to sort itself out.

As for the gameplay itself, it's great fun, i'm loving the empire. Just all round fun and each faction has suh nice subtle differences to create a fresh eperiance between them all. Will admit i've just been playing comp stomps and free for alls which tend to turn into every holding on for dire survival or the brutals absoluty flattening us. Good enemy ai kind of even if it is cheating. The way it integrates naval gameplay is so much better than the occasional hovwer unit in supcom for example.

Been playing this with a friend in Co-op and its a blast. Co-op always adds a heap load of fun value to a game and this is no exception. So far we've done the soviet and allies campaign on hard and its been both challenging and varied.

The style does take some getting used to and at first i was wishing for the darker styles of the last offering but it really grows on you and looks great on big fights. Also i like the mix of missions, certainly gives you chance to work as a team in coop.

Its definately not a GOTY but as someone who loves playing with a good frience on voice comms this to me is a better overall experience than playing CoH, WiC etc solo. So there you have it, grab a friend and all is well :D

does anyone else think the superweapons are over powered?

Why bother to build the good stuff when I cans imply score a few points and kill them with way overpowered superweapons, I can destroy all their tanks way faster than they can build them for example with no risk, no superweapon building to build, no power to maintain, it just goes on until the game ends which isn't long as the map is so freaking small and the super weapons are so good.

Seems console oriented to me...

.

To be honest i havent yet built a single super weapon yet, having too much fun with the battleships and transformers. But what you're saying has been the case with just about every strategy game in the last gazzillion years, build four more tanks or a nuke. In supcom for example it's often dozens of hundreds of even powerful unit costs for a single game ending unit which is a huge risk to take as the enemy can out produce you for the said time. RA3 has the same grade of super weapon that recent cnc games have all had which can level most of someone's base which was not the case in tib-sun and before.

I don't mind the standard super weapons, at least you can kill the building, it is the ones you gain from points, the Soviets have one that throws all tanks into the air and kill them, that can take out al your tanks every few minutes, faster than you can build em and it happens every few minutes, no way of stopping it other than spreading out your tanks.

Will play more but I aint liking it that much.

i'll just refer to them as generals powers then :p

I often forget to use them as well, but it's nice how they force you into choices on which ones you select, is there an upper limit on how many you can get though because i dont think i've reached that yet even in six player games. I dont think they're too overpowered at all though and the orbital drop thing is always a laugh to watch.

My favorite thing has to be the fact you cant purchase upgrades for units, what i have always enjoyed about most of the cnc series where your early units stay the same throughout.

<idiot mode>

How do i move the magnet tank grabber thingy?

</idiot mode>

I can pick up one or two tanks at a time, but i can't move the spot where it hits, even though it's showing direction arrows.

And i keep screwing up the left/right click for stuff, why do they have to mess with the basics!

seem to make logging into the servers quicker and more reliable. Haven't had it fail to connect since and this is multiple pcs on the same network connecting at the same time.

Hey all, I've just bought this :) My friend also bought it I wondered something;

I will be installing this game on my PC to play.

However, he has a laptop, and a PC, and I will be going round there to play 2 players (us vs 2 others online etc) do we need a 3rd copy? Or can we install his copy on 2 machines? Will it crash out due to the same serial number?

won't let the same serial numbers play together, might be able to change a reg key to your serial thou.

owning if i do say so myself, wouln't you agree teaboy?
