Red Dead Redemption 2

I think I'm about halfway through chapter two, and I only realised last night that you can switch to first-person view!

I think I prefer moving around towns, and especially shops, in first-person since you can see what you're interacting with more easily, and you do away with the lumbering turing circle and jerky stopping and starting motions Arthur has at times. I haven't done any gunfighting in first-person yet, but it seems like that might feel smoother too.

I can't decide whether this is something I'll stick with or not. It looks cool to feel closer to the detailed world, but it puts Arthur as a character less front-and-centre, and the game hasn't felt for me yet like my own sandbox, but more Arthur's story in that world.

There's no way I'd want first-person on horseback, and I can't imagine it working well for fistights either. I think using the setting to switch back to third-person in cover might also be best.

Anyone else played through very much of the game in first-person?

Played most of the game in 1st person view. While on horse it doesn't automatically unequip weapons, if I ride together with other people (during missions), is enough to keep W pressed and the horse keeps the grouping and doesn't go all over the place like it does in 3rd person view while looking back to shoot at enemies, firefights are much better and overall moving around seems smoother since the "dead times" of the 3rd person are not that much of an issue, the world is detailed enough to be explored in 1st person view (a FoV slider for 1st person would have not hurt as it's too narrow!), etc. To me, I'd rather play in 1st person than in 3rd.

One thing would also come great, is to have the scroll wheel as an input to change the speed of the character, like it was/is in Hidden and Dangerous 2, Splinter Cell, Star Cizien, etc. Is so much useful to have a better control over your character's avatar than just walk, run, sprint.

what settings are you using? This game has phenominal graphics...
I agree but it’s the lighting, particles and other animated things going on around you rather than the out and out textures. I suppose that’s why an Xbox one x can run this game at ultra textures but without all the eye candy of the pc version.

I hog tied a KKK member today, put him on my horse, rode to the high railway bridge over a river, threw him over the edge and my honour increased :D

Also, if you look at the water by the train station at Annesburg, you can see the oily film on the water from the grim of the sidings. It’s incredible attention to detail that astounds me.

:D

Have you tried setting fire to it? I haven't, just wondering if it's possible.

Mine crashed in the same place/mission in Epilogue part 2 again.
Decided to go exploring the far west of the map instead. Now I have a bounty on my head in that part.

Hmm. Maybe I will try first-person horse riding. It looked too constrained when I tried it. I like the wide open vistas of third-person riding too much, I think.

There are separate first-person and third-person FOV sliders in the settings, btw. I couldn't play with the defauly first-person FOV at all.

Addendum:
Something seemed up with the Pouring Oil mission. John sent me to find an oil wagon. I set off, but a group of bounty hunters ambushed me halfway there. I killed them and by the time I had looted their bodies, my objective marker changed, telling me to go back to John, and the game was acting as if I'd ignored the wagon objective - "I clean forgot," Arthur said. No you didn't! You stopped for like two minutes to shoot some bounty hunters and take their money!

Is there a really tight time limit for this part of the mission? Is it worth going back to an earlier save to try again? (Think I might end up having to do the Micah mission over again too if I do that, so only want to if it's worth it).

Snow? You're on the 2 hour intro tutorial by the sounds of things. It's a massive pain in the arse and isn't indicative of the 'proper' game.

Ultra is huge overkill and there's quite a lot of comment online about how demanding the game is when you push it to the max. There are many guides out there, some posted earlier, which will get you 90% of the effect (made up figure, sue me) at Medium/High/sometimes Ultra (where beneficial) without having to go Ultra on everything. The terms and definitions (med, high, ultra etc) are not common for this game compared to its peers (where you might go Ultra because that's the best and isn't generally punitive).

Where is this in the 3,000 posts?

I haven't started playing yet looking to optimize for 1440p on a Vega 64. Hoping to start playing this weekend, it looks great.

Yeah, the FoV was far too narrow (it's a "thing" of modern gaming), but I play Surround (3 monitors), so the issue is somewhat better in cases such as these, although not completed alleviated.

Gone lassoed myself some down right rascals last eve. Cast them there into the river for the croc's cos I ain't waistin no hooves on degenerates. Bounty be damned..

I think I keep screwing up the random encounters! I stopped to try to help one guy who seemed to be having trouble with his horse, but as I walked around him wondering how I interact with this situation, his horse kicked him to death. It was really sudden and actually quite disturbing!

A mile or two further along the same road, I see a stagecoach being held up at gunpoint and the driver calling for help. So I'm wondering what I do here. I mean, Arthur is an outlaw who's robbed many a coach of his own, so he's not going to automatically side with the driver. But then I see him as quite honorable and avoiding violence where possible so maybe I need to defuse the situation. As I'm assessing things and looking for interaction prompts, one of the robbers calls out "hey, it's Arthur Morgan!" "Aha, I think, there guys must be old acquaintances." So I put away my guns and approach to see if I can talk to them. Whereupon they immediately gun me down. I guess that was the wrong choice! :) But how was I to know?!

I also seem to be having some trouble with deadeye. Sometimes I can paint targets, sometimes I can't. Is range an issue with this?

Also, can you not paint targets when aiming down scopes? I don't think I've managed to do that yet.

And sometimes I find I can't go into deadeye at all despite having some core left - is there a cooldown on it?

It's a very helpful mechanic, but I am not finding I feel I can rely on it.

i was in actual tears of laughter at that i just walked up to him and said 'hey mister' he turned around and got volleyed it was bloody hilarious.. so i looted him and moved on :D

My camp lockbox has literally just turned into a christmas wrapped box and is now sat under a christmas tree in the camp. I'm guessing some Christmas aesthetics have gone into the gameworld :)

I must have an incredibly morbid sense of humour, because I found the following side quest to be absolutely hilarious (mid game side quest spoiler) -

The dead pan manner in which Arthur explains to the criminal that he is going to be used to trial a new form of execution and the guys responses

How's the performance on this now compared with launch day? Tempted at that new price on CDKeys although I have a medicore system.

Better not having any issues and been using the Hardware unboxing settings, still running Vulcan currently as DX12 used to cause me to crash, may switch it back and see if DX12 now works for me.
