Red Dead Redemption 2

I think I read they changed that and now you need the launcher to run GTA V as well. Not 100% though since I don't own that game.

Yep you do, having it on Steam is just a management thing the game still runs the Rockstar launcher.

Got the special edition for £42.99 from CDKeys, which included 50 Gold Bars for Red Dead Online etc.

That's a very nice price, you can't get it for that anymore. At least with RS you get an extra game I suppose, plus they do state RS exclusive goodies but I'm not sure exactly what they are.

Sounds like the game is underoptimised and is a sloppy port, if a One X can run it as stunning as it looks and on a PC it'll look better but not by much, very negligible and if it's struggling to run at 4K 60 then this highlights a sloppy port. Remember a One X is equivalent to a GTX1060.

Can’t wait to give this a go!

Can anyone who has played both tell me: Is it important that I play through the first before I play through the second?

Hopefully we see a digital foundry write up in the coming days. I'm happy to play at 30fps (as that was fine of ps4) with maybe higher visual settings on a 1070. My main concern should probably be my ancient i5 2500k @4.5. Might not be up to the task

Or dip the settings to ps4 level to achieve 60fps. Who knows. Their games haven't always been the most optimised experiences but GTA V was better than their past efforts

Does anyone know if this has the same settings as GTAV? You could set the camera to auto switch between first and third person while driving or on foot. GTAV third person driving then first person while on foot was a fantastic gaming experience.

I only play rdr2 in third person on consoles, never looked at auto camera switching.

I'm also looking forward to a mouse for aiming, on console the aim was unresponsive and downright annoying.

That was part of the charm for me, being a realistic type of western. Missing shots on the console made for some decent shootouts and made it fit the genre. I hope we are not getting headshots to easy all the time.

Saying that with my specs it probably won't be that responsive so will probably miss a few shots anyway :)

I think you will be fine for a decent gaming experience. Your 1070 will take care of most of it.
Bear in mind we wont be running around at 100 MPH on horses :D

I am quite hopeful my OC'd 980Ti will be more than up for the job. We will find out in a few hours.

I hear what you're saying but it felt like the aiming wasn't like that by design, it had some sort of dead zone problem.
