Red Dead Redemption Thread

New York Times said:
In the more than 1,100 articles I have written for this newspaper since 1996, I have never before called anything a tour de force. Yet there is no more succinct and appropriate way to describe Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar rides again.

:D

With regard to the 360 vs PS3 debate, from videos and such the PS3 version looks very smooth, and it's being reported the differences are very few and far between. I'll keep looking for info.

(Not trying to start a flame war, just want to find out for myself so I know which version to get come friday :p)

If anyone else finds any comparisons and such, please post them :D

It's released in the USA imminently so there should be plenty of stuff to look over tomorrow ;)

The BIG difference for me (PS3 owner) is going to be the presence/lack of AA and the resolution. If it's got no AA and is sub-HD, I'm going to seriously think about getting my hands on a 360.

I shouldn't have watched the review - I really want this game now. I have a feeling Tesco will fail.

Looking at both of the videos from different review sites, it looks to me that the PS3 doesn't have AA, whereas the 360 has 2xMSAA.

Definitely nothing to go by here, just what it looks like to me. I noticed more aliasing in the PS3 footage at times than i did in the 360.

But ill wait until LensofTruth or Digital Foundry until we can draw any meaningful conclusions. Both versions look great though, very smooth frame rate on each.

I'm so glad I only found out about this game last week. I love not having to wait for games, after the years of torture that was my teens painstakingly waiting for the next AAA release. Except now my games don't get bought for me.. swings and roundabouts.. and guns.. and shootouts.. and whiskey.. hookers.. nuns.. trains..

I've been playing GTA IV to get my appetite back for sandbox games. I'm FINALLY getting around to finishing TLAD, only a few more missions to go.

I forgot how clunky the player movement in GTA IV can be, I hope this isn't so obvious in RDR.

To get this thread back on track. What is the first thing you are going to do in game ? Lasso a nun ? Shoot the sheriff ? Get incredibly drunk and ride some women ?

I think i may steal a horse and ride to a few places and admire the view. Then kill some nuns:D

I'm hoping I can slip it in a nun, tbh.

My mate who works at the game shop at my road showed me his delivery today (he got 20 copies but 26 pre-orders and one of thems mine)
he was teasing me with it from behind the counter telling me how shiny it is and everything.

He then said I could have it 3 days early :)

For £1000 :(

Just glad I'm off Friday and Saturday

A mate?

A swift kick to the Shoryukens was in order there. :p

Just a little pic to whet some appetites. :)

When will the n-out-of-n scoring system be done away with? A well-written subjective review should matter only; not some arbitrary numerical 'score'. How the frick can something as deep and complex as a computer game simply have a number slapped on it, deeming how good it is? Moreover, why do people flock to these scores like they're the Rosetta Stone of predicting whether or not you'll like a game.

Far too many statements like this: "9.8, so as good as Halo, then?". Good? Define 'as good'... As good compared to how much you liked Halo? Or good as in compared to how much everyone did? And how much is that? 9.8/10 people abso-****in'-lutely loved the **** out of Halo and wanted to mate and have little compact disc children with it while the remaining 0.2 people flushed it down the toilet?

The poor reviewer makes his/her notes, pours over the game for hours and hours, coming to logical and subjective opinions regarding every facet of a massive game and puts it all down into 3 or 4 pages of professional prose - to response "omg 9.8! lol ign gave gta4 10/10 and it were crapppp lol". If there was no numerical score stapled to the bottom of every review, perhaps people would READ the review and come to their own subjective and informed opinion instead of letting a number make the decision for them.

I don't tend to read too much into reviews. I do have a read through and see what they liked and disliked. I will watch quite a few videos and I find watching these gives me a better idea of how it plays. Seeing the game in motion with the mechanics is more important than reading someone else's writing.
