1-6 were fantastic.
7-9 were pretty terrible bar the odd great moment.
10 was a decent return to form.

If we stop expecting a replication of 1-6 and just enjoy it for what it is then it is still great comedy.

Personally, I'll be looking forward to it.

This! Although 7-8 were OK in comparison to 9! I like to think 9 was just a hallucination brought on by exposure to a despair squid! :D

It's been pretty poor, with the odd highlight, since Rob Grant left the writing team (end of series VI).

If you read any of the novels either him or Doug Naylor have written independently of each other (Red Dwarf or otherwise), you can see why.

Grant has that knack for writing something consistently funny, that remains on the borderline of plausible. Naylor does not.

Series 1 to 6 are much better than 7 to 10, but I think 10 gets unfairly tarred with the same brush as 7, 8 and 9. 10 is miles better than those. If 11 and 12 follow the style of 10 then we are into a winner.

Just watch 1 to 6, the last episode of 8, and then 10 onwards :p.

zimmer frames on standby

Actually, "He'll never need a Zimmer!"

To be fair nothing beats the first 6 seasons and they should have stopped there. Look at programs like Blackadder or Fawlty Towers - they could have easily made another bunch of series but it was a brilliant mix of actors and writers that made something exceptional for that time, even if you could bring all those people back together I doubt it would be as good.

The writing was definitely much stronger when Grant and Naylor weren't writing for the American market which in part (for me anyway) made the later seasons bu Naylor alone (with a few additional writers) very hit and miss, but saying that I personally have no issue seeing this returning to the screen given even the poorer episodes make better TV than a lot of the drivel seen these days.

Agree with Skeeter - series 10 was definitely better than 7 onwards.

Back to Earth was a joke and I'm glad isn't looked on as a season in the RD cannon.

Perhaps I should hold off my criticism / skepticism. I'd forgotton that Red Dwarf X actually existed (haven't seen it) and had thought that Back to Earth was the last we'd seen of it.

Think that's what a lot of people have done and thought back to earth was the latest. Its an abomination, but 10 is pretty good and better than 7,8,9 :)
