Red oil light

So I just called for an update, he's done some checks and apparently there's zero pressure at the oil pump, but he wants to run some more checks later. He said it could just be a blocked filter or the pump based on what he had checked so far.

Most spin on oil filters have an internal bypass valve that opens and flows unfiltered oil rather than heavily restricted or even no oil at all. It is sounding like you now own an expensive anchor :(

So...garage say it had the wrong oil in, which they've sorted and they've checked the belt and driven it around and no more oil light. The Bill is £250....why do I feel like it'll come on as soon as I pick it up

Sounds like they're winging it and it's made enough of a difference to keep it off for a little bit.

For £250 it's very unlikely they have checked the belt, given the amount of parts that need to come off to get to it, and then it will need replacement gasket for the cam cover etc

This is my first thoughts.
I sold my 1.0ecoboost after talking to an ex ford mechanic about the cam belt, as we were nearing an age where we may have had problems.

Edit, how was the oil wrong and how did they test it?
Also when, I mean if your oil light comes back on in the next few weeks, are they giving you your money back?!

Another edit, what is their belt inspection criteria, a wet oily belt will hide many problems, cracks, tiny bits of rubber peeled away.

I do feel bad for you, it seems you're going to have to pay up, or you won't get your car back and potentially it comes back.

Just called him and he said they've not had the engine out they've had a scope in (apparently removed trim or whatever) and there were no copper filings in the oil, which is a symptom.

Going to assume this is bull••••.

Belt degradation causes bits of the belt to get stuck in the pickup. It wouldn't be copper, though I guess they are thinking copper filings would be from bearing wear as a result of low oil?

You don't really want to wait until it's done damage though, I'd want to know the actual belt isn't degrading BEFORE it starves the engine and wears the bearings.

So I've had the car since new (2015) and had it services and motd every year, apart from this year when I just got it serviced. Is it possible that the really cold tempts combined with wrong oil caused this?

The guy said the oil was thicker than it should be...no idea if that's legit or not

They might be right, maybe they checked the viscosity, maybe they are a decent garage, I just don't trust any of them!
With thicker oil, I'd expect to still see pressure, just reduced flow, which you won't see.

I'm not sure about checking with a bore scope for particles in oil in the engine, they dropped it and changed it, so why not check it then? Unless they were checking on the sump floor, for bits that didn't come out. Maybe they sucked it out rather than dump through the plug.

If anything I’d expect higher pressure with thicker oil - certainly seen this in the past - I can’t help feeling they are pulling a fast one here unfortunately. :/

The wrong oil is usually what accelerates the degradation of the belt, which in turn then blocks up the oil strainer pick up.

Too thick of an oil would perhaps accelerate wear on some components of the engine, but wouldn’t in itself cause low oil pressure.

Not 100% sure what weight oil a 1.0 Ecoboost uses but if its heavier than it should be, combined with the very low temps, I could possibly see that the oil pump would have some trouble from cold. But then OP said the light came on while he was driving and close to home.
