I've also found myself listening to music till late most of the weekend, something i didn't really bother to do and it's amazing the difference that positioning makes. No amount of increased spending can touch it for impact. I mostly listen to acoustic type stuff for 80% of the time so having big volume isn't an issue.
Exactly!
Some people spend a reasonable amount of money and place nice speakers on a desk. Spending more money to get better sound, only to hinder that by sticking them on a desk. :/
I've only got some Wharfedale 9.1's, but there is such a difference between were I have them located on stands roughly in centre of a long wall, compared to on my PC desk in the corner of a room. I tried them there, just as an experiment; they didn't sound as good. Even the speakers I do have on my desk; Roth Oli 1's, sounded better when I placed them on the stands where the 9.1's are.
It's one thing to have some cheap speakers on a desk in the corner of a room. It's quite another to get bigger and more expensive speakers with the aim of better sound, then stick them on a desk.
For speakers on stands, the trouble is that they are top heavy. Not ideal if there are kids and dogs running around. Floor standing speakers will be better as they are much heavier and the weight isn't mostly at the top.
Stand mount or floor standing speakers, I think one issue many people have had with kids in particular, is their fondness of poking fingers at parts of speakers where fingers should not go.
Floor standing speakers will surely be the best option if wandering fingers can be kept under control.
Otherwise; maybe a decent soundbar or wall mounted speakers.
