Redundancy....

Who would work their notice period after being made redundant, thats ridicilous.

"You are being made redundant"
"**** you!
"But you need to work your notice period"
"Ok sure"

That is not going to happen. If you are made redundant you leave immediately.

Depending on the job being made redundant, the company might escort you off the premises. This is to prevent industrial sabotage etc. It's happening where my other half works.

Depends on the person I guess. At some of our depots some guys are working their notice and others have been escorted to the yard gate as soon as they are told.

PK!

It happens where I work, but this must the most demoralising part of the whole procedure, its like been walked from the docks to your cell.

If it happens to me i'd be more likely just to say nothing as soon as im informed and walk off.

Anyway if it happens it happens, look on it as a new opportunity, easier said than done though. Good luck.

Just remember, if it is you, that it is the role being made redundant and not you personally.

Bull tbh. Its a legalised way of getting rid of people that either cost too much, cause trouble for management, or too often just simply get on with their work. More often than not the job is delegated to another group of people. But I agree dont take it personally or brood over it. Thats why these days I treat work the way employment should be treated you are there to do a job thats it.

I am currently working my notice period (of 11 weeks). Depends on the job and the individual. None of the people being made redudant have been given garden leave. At the end of the day the company is still paying me to do a job and so professionally I am obliged to honour my side of the contract.

Let us say however that my motivation levels are somewhat lower and I am not doing my usual amount of effort nor any additional hours. :D

I agree, it's tarring everyone with the same brush. There are some fools about though who would mess things up before leaving. (and slip something into the boot of their car) :D

They decide if you work your notice not you, unless they specifically ask you to choose.
Yes, i know. But the line i quoted seemed to imply that, given the choice, it would be "ridiculous" to work your notice period.

I sort of got made redundant / end of contract at my last Techie job last year. While working there last April i got told that the up coming budgets for the new tax year & the new start of the school academic year 2009 for the following September were not looking good this year & this was also aimed at School wages. This meant that because the current techie who was already there (he was only part time though 2 days a week but started working there 2 weeks before i started) and i worked there full time 5 days a week, and both of our contracts were only temp ones for 12 months due to the money situation,

Towards the end of the contracts (contract did not end until sept though because school finished the following summer in July we had to have the interview early) they by law had to give us a new job interview to re-new our contracts. Problem was though that only 1 of us could have the job. Great i thought, i was at no compitition with this other guy but i did have a slight feeling that i would get the job only because i was currently full time. Interview came & went very well with my ICT manager & a couple of other staff from the school. After an hour or so i got called back to the interview room where only the school's dep head was there. Got told that i was "unsucessful" which i though oh s***. Anyway the other guy got the job and it turned out it would only be fair that he got the job because he had been working there longer than me (despite the fact that he was only part time and i was full time wtf??)

Anyway i had to face the last few weeks of working there knowing i would not be coming back next term but i still worked my best right up to the end but i could never understand why they still did a job interview for us both in the first place for the job and him to get it because he had been there the longest.

Anyway i hope you get to keep your job Munky - Liam

If I was made redundant here, i have a WHOLE load of kit that belongs to me, it would take a couple of trips to clear my desk if they put me on gardening leave :D

Good luck buddy, hope it works out!

The only thing i had to take home with me when i finished my Techie job was a pen LOL

Funny enough as well because after i finished i was trying to chase my new P45 that they were supposed to supply me for weeks and it was so late right up to the point where i rang the school's finance department up & she said that she was very sorry because she had forgot to notify my local council that i had finished working for the school & thats why i had not received the P45. Lastly she said i was lucky i rang up because i would have still be getting paid by the school if i had of not rang them up LOL! Sadly though the payday shedule was 2 days away then!

I have had to work the notice period for my redundancy, I finish on the 23rd. I didn't have much of a choice, and I also didn't have anything else lined up until this morning :)

Chin up mate, it is possible to come out of this in a better position.

Well, I was in fact made redundant. I have to work for the next two weeks it would appear, as the procedure is a bit weird. Today was notification (from my boss,) next week I meet with HR about it, and then the week after it's official. It doesn't make much sense. The worst part was having to walk back up to the office when everyone was looking at me to know if I was being let go. I was instructed not to tell anyone until all the 1-on-1 meetings were out of the way, so I just said "don't ask I can't say!"

I think that the people who know me very well knew that I was let go though...that whole walking through the commercial office was very surreal...like I was outside myself watching myself.

I had to stop at the pub on the way home for a pint & brekkie...as an aside, never, I repeat, NEVER use a Whetherspoon's toilet for a number 2...its just wrong!

Anyhow - today I get ****ed...Tomorrow, the next chapter of my life starts. The funny thing is, no matter how hard I try, I can't get mad at my boss. To be fair to him, he decided to meet with us one on one, as opposed to HR just sending out letters or having a group meeting. He's a stand-up guy for it. I loved that company dearly...

At least I can honestly hold my head up and say that I did the best job I could possibly do, and 99.9% of the time is was good enough or better. I've made friends there that I'll keep for life...It just sucks to feel cast aside...

The really funny thing is that I've been working on a project to save the company about £55,000 a year, and am about 95% finished with it. They'll never get to use it though, since I'm leaving.

Thanks for the support though guys..

By the way...can someone point me in the direction of what benefits I'm entitled to? I don't have a lot of money saved up at all, so will be looking at milking the system for all I can until I get myself another job. I'm not a benefit cheat, but I figure with all the tens of thousands of pounds I've put into the system, I'm entitled to get something back (for the first time in my life.) I've never taken a penny of government money before, but heck, I've earned it!
