Reinstall Windows to replace Boot SSD?

I would have thought that, since you are just going from one SSD to another, you would be able to clone it. Why don't you try it and see. The worst that can happen is you end up doing a clean install anyway.

On the other hand, as a personal preference I almost always do a fresh install where possible, just for the guaranteed 'clean-ness'.

I cloned recently and whilst I was able to boot up ok, the ssd alignment was incorrect. If you're going to clone, make sure you read up on ssd alignment. Not all cloning software correctly aligns the HD.

In the end it was just easier to do a clean format which I'm glad I did.

Humm, will prob go for clean install then... wanted to be a little lazy but looks like it's better to put the effort in and avoid problems further down the line.

I went for the lazy approach and would probably not even have noticed that the alignment was out until I did a AS SSD benchmark.

I think you've gone for the best approach. A clean build is just so liberating and maximises the potential of the hd.

Let us know how you get on.

Going through the switch over now, should i be making a full system image and then installing windows on the new drive? From there i can restore the image to the new drive and all should be the same as before right?

Are you going down the cloning route? If so, by cloning you effectively are creating an identical image on the target hard disk so you don't need to perform any windows install.

No my plan was to do a fresh install and then restore parts from a backup. Just wondering how much i can backup? user files is easy, but what about installed programs?

If you're doing a fresh install, just backup your data. The programs will need to be re-installed.

Do the firmware update first. Mitigates the risk of losing any data.

ARGGHHGHGH!!!! Just made a massive F up. I added a 3TB with my new 256 SSD to give me more space. The plan was to move all the stuff like dekstop, documents, music, videos, to the big drive for storage. moved all that i needed apart from desktop into the same file structure, then when i move the desktop folder it goes and overwrites the folder F:/Users/Adam the place where all the other folders were. Now i cant seem to re organise!!!!!! HELP!
