remote access

basically, i will hopefulyl be getting a new computer and was thinking due to uni halls being stupidly slow and banning everything was going to leave this one at home and all set up.
The reason why is so I can use a remote access (phone my dad up and be like, oi dad, turn it on and then select "yes") so i can continue using torrents and what not, as i know last year I couldnt use them (althought iam going into accomodation)
This will hopefully be faster than 256kps connection (i would hardly call 4xthe speed of dial up fast broad band connection) and torrents.
So...after all that spraffing?

Anybody got any suggestions of software to use to do this? As said dont need to turn it on from afar, just need something where I can take controll to select what i want then will allow me to copy them over onto my other computer.

RealVNC would be my reccomendation.

You will need to forward the ports if you have a router (I reccomend changing them from the defaults for security).

USB modm or Virging Modem? Check your software firewall settings.

Server runs as a service so the computer just needs to be turned on (no need to select yes etc).

Certain editions support SSL 128bit and upwards encryption, just a nice privacy feature.

Copying files is as easy as copy and paste.

Hope this helps.

One important thing you will need to setup is dyndns. It gives a domain name to your IP address.

Most ISP's give their customers dynamic IP's meaning they can change over time, dyndns will give your IP a domain name via its client that will update the users account with the new IP if it has changed.

This solution if all free so it's all good. Real VNC costs about £16 though.

I have not tried Garyj881's suggestion, in theory you do not need to take dyndns into consideration, nor most firewall issues by following his suggestion. I have not heard of this software. Let us know how you get on if you do decide this route.

eeek, its all dutch to me =[

i know one freind who can remote access us on our end we have to go to a website, and then ask to connect to him and what not, but i have no idea whats involved at his end...

looks like i may be out of luck just due to lack of knowledge.

I am looking for similar software, but to connect to my brothers router, which has 4 pcs on it. There are many solutions to one to one PC's but when one PC on a static IP wishes to remotely access 4 pcs behind a firewall and router, its not as easy in my opinion.

I have spent ages looking at the logmein website but i dont think they have a simple solution to my needs.

How do you do that in RealVNC? I've never been able to transfer files from my server to my viewer, am I missing something in setup or am I just being a bit thick?

I am using version 4.2.7, the option is server side and is turned on by default. Check through its configuration for Inputs > share files with clients. You must both be using the VNCViewer.exe not a java applet in an internet browser. Right click copy (either PC), rightclick and paste. Must be in an active session for this to work (i.e you cannot copy - connect - past. You must connect - copy - paste).

I hope something in the above may help. Otherwise just re-install it, delete old reg keys, prgram data and temp files aswell (might aswell).

Good luck with that

I don't know if log me in works like this but using RealVNC you could set up a server on each of the PC's, reconfigure each ones listening port to a different one in the RealVNC configuration and each through the router. I beleive you can then connect using (IP):(port) or (IP)::(port). One or the other means desktop, not port. RealVNC as with most VNC software will allow multiple VNC sessions client side.

Just a note, VNC can be a tedious thing to setup if you are not familiar with general networking. I beleive Logmein is a simple vnc solution , again this I have not tested. What can I say, I like to have "control" of a service on my PC accessable from any PC on the internet.

Another logmein user here, it may not be as configurable as VNC but it's easy to setup and even easier to use, no setting up ports or messing with IP addresses.

At the end of the day they're all free so try them all and see which ones you like.

Give LogMeIn a whirl

Specifically, this should suit your needs: https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/

It looks really easy to get it working and once working really easy to use.

Why not use the Remote Desktop built into XP Pro/Vista? It's a heck of a lot faster than VNC. You can even hack it to allow multiple users to log into one system.

True, but I don't know if it well be as fast and secure as LogMeIn. This application comes through Microsoft update or by manual download.

However, so many people in these forums with good technical knowledge have opted for LogMeIn, must be for good reason if you ask me. It is generally this way for Microsoft products, except for their operating systems and office suites.

This is merely an opinion, not a confrontation.
