We live in a conservation area and wish to remove a redundant chimney stack whilst having some roof work done. I'm just wondering if anyone has been through the process for this and what documents were needed to support the planning application?

Never done this myself but it might be worth doing a quick search on your local planning portal for "chimney removal" or similar and see what other people have submitted?

Is it a shared stack/chimney?

I had one removed to the loft but couldn't go any further as it was structural for the rest of the stack.

Same. We had the rear one removed in the loft for more space. Left the chimney breasts in on the first and ground floors though as we'll be putting in a fireplace surround in the study and a nice alcove in the dining room. We're not in a conservation area but to my mind it was just the architects drawings supplied to the council planning etc. and signed off.

Probably very much depends on your planning/conservation officer and what mood they are in on the day.

We live in a conservation area - Our next door neighbour's planning to get chimney removed was rejected, ours has been removed however 8 years prior and I doubt planning permission (or anything else) was gained as when we bought the property we had to get indemnity insurance on it.

I emailed local planning office, and they've responded to say it doesn’t need planning permission which is good news. I explained what would be done etc and a couple of questions from them, but I have it in writing that it's not needed in my instance

Having removed two chimneys from the stack down the floor in our renovation project home I can most certainly say it's not the nicest of jobs!

Expect lots of dust and dirt - empty and seal the rooms as best as you possibly can and the dust/soot will still make it's way to every other room in the house :p

This chimney has only ever been for fumes from an old gas boiler, so hopefully slight less messy but I guess we will find out. I'm trying to find out from building control if calculations from a structural engineer are required for the roof down.
