Renting with animals - why is it almost impossible?

"Legally different categories"....ok....but in reality even to you it's more then that.....which do you save if you only have time to save one from falling off a cliff? Assuming the child....so then do the next test, if the dog is easier to save first but it adds 10% extra risk to your childs safety do you save the dog first......?

One more step...if your dog and another person's child run out in front of your car you can steer away from one but into the other which do you choose?

Clearly it's not the same and it's not about legal category.... Your just upset that other people don't care about your pets...

Ahh, hypotheticals. How about you replace the dog with another child and give yourself the choice of which of your children to save? How about if it was the child’s mother/your partner? In theory of course I would save my child, but reality these are all trolley problems with answers that have a million factors involved in split second decisions which you can’t predict and assume there’s no other option.

I don’t care what you or anyone think about my pet or my child, but neither is going up for adoption. (Although the 1 year old is currently pushing the limits of that more than the dog ever has…)

Well I guess we can at least agree that it's a good thing they are in "Legally different categories" so when you make the wrong choice your dog can visit you in prison....

Family Guy did an episode about this when Brian (a dog) ran over another dog in a car. Nobody cared but to him he’d committed manslaughter…

.....dogslaughter?

Erm, anyway. I'd like a dog, but I bought a 5090 instead I'm just not in the right headspace for one right now. Also, I'm renting, so I'd need to buy a place...

So maybe someday :(

I have 4 dogs and 4 cats, but then I own my property. My sister rents, and has 2 dogs and 3 cats. Every “Insoection season” she has to ship the cats and the dogs off to a friend. Sort of ridiculous, she keeps the house immaculate.

My view is that you should be able to have what you like as long as you put the property back to how it was when you moved in, when you ultimately vacate.

Fun fact: Having been raised in a council house, which my parents tried and failed to buy, I vowed that I would never rent a home and always buy. At 46, that’s exactly what I’ve done. (Mortgage free)

But what if you have your cat, your dog, your child, your partner, and your favourite graphics card are all about to fall off a cliff? Who do you save?! I need answers!

This thread has been some true OcUK gold! :D

Edit: it's obviously your graphics card. Don't come out with that family and human life nonsense.

That’s more animals than we do. We have 4 dogs and two cats.

According to some in this thread we’re mentally unstable.

I couldn’t give a toss what people think of my pets. They’re part of the family and is the reason why they came with us from South Africa. If you think that’s mad — that’s fine. You know what they say about opinions? They’re like ********. Everyone has one. ;)

I wouldn’t worry about most say on here. If some on this forum think owning so many pets makes you/me mentally unstable, so be it. I’m doing alright and that’s what matters.

Like you, our pets are loved ones, part of the family. I have a house and grounds big enough whereby ours can tire themselves out. Indeed, we’ve just built a summer house, attached to our conservatory just for the cats (They don’t get let outside - too valuable and friendly) so they can experience ‘outdoor environment’!!

Some people just don’t get it, don’t argue with stupid. I commend you for making such a big move and factoring in the furbabies, the world needs more people like you. I don’t envy your tricky position and like my sister, it’s either lie about the amount of pets you have, or sadly buy a place which I appreciate is potentially difficult.

Well, we have decided to stay where we are for the next year and save up a deposit. Not as quick as we would like. But that’s fine it is what it is. I’m no longer going to beg landlords to allow us to have pets in their home. They don’t want pets. Fine. Their choice.

Anyone who has pets and doesn’t love them like they’re part of the family are a bit weird. But someone who loves their pets as much as their children are also a bit weird

I agree that it's natural to love a pet that is part of the family. Especially a dog that will actually be pleased to see you and want to spend time with you. However, for some years a childless couple lived by me who literally referred to their dog as being their daughter. Which behaviour did feel as though it crossed the line into weirdness.

Luckily I managed to attach the support rope just as he went over. Bit banged up, but purring now

Yes, that’s a little odd. My brother was the same with his dog (who we brought with us to UK as he left for the US). Carried it on his shoulder. Treated it like a baby. Was just weird.

Sickening. A whole thread defending landlords preventing people living normal family lives with a pet.

A nation of pet lovers? Nah, a nation of ******* landlord lovers

Since when is four dogs and two cats a pet?

I suspect if it was just one or two the OP would have had more success, I wouldn't want to rent to someone with that many animals either.
