Replacing an E46...than another E46?

I've owned an E46 323i for the last 3 years now and think its an absolutely fabulous car even though it's been a bit pricey to maintain.

The problem is that I'm going to be doing a lot more trips up and the country from now on, as I have a job in London but tend to return to Harrogate (Yorkshire) more or less every weekend for the GF (450 miles round trip)

In mixed A/B/town, I get about 27mpg but now with the increase in mileage and the stratospheric petrol prices, I could do with something more economical - possibly a (urrghhhh) diesel. I thought about a 320d but read some horror stories in Bimmer magazine about the inlet manifold disintegrating and taking the engine with it.

I can get about £3.5k - £4k trade in for my current car and could spend about another £1k or so. Don't think private is realistic as there are a couple of minor dents in the bodywork which would probably put off private buyers

What do people think my options are? Should I get 320d (is it in budget) and pay the cost of replacing the manifold (with associated labour costs) or should I consider something else?

Any car has to be reasonably quiet as there's nothing worse having to put up with a constant done for several hours on the motorway and would prefer something interesting rather than usual Mondo/Astra fayre. Would a Lexus IS diesel be any good?

It will be a totally shagged 320d for that money.

Lexus have only recently released a diesel, so you definitely won't get one for under about 15k.

i wouldnt touch a 320d, some guys off here got me interested in one so i read up on them and heard lots of horror stories. if i were you id get a A4 1.9 tdi 130, it will be more economical and more reliable then a 320d

And equally as unobtainable for £4.5k.

ahh forgot about the price. if you REALLY need a diesel (or just think you do like most people) what about a mondeo 2.0 tdci + warranty direct, they're nice cars tbh.

Okay, the 320d is out then since people seem to think they're unreliable at high mileages (though my car has done 100k and its still running fine).

Nah, don't want a Mondeo.

Don't like the looks of the things, its closer in size to a 5 than a 3, and I don't have a family of kids/dogs/relatives that I have to put into the back.

Would consider moving down a size class if necessary, provided the car's still reasonably quiet on the motorway.

Any other suggestions?

Old Audi A3.... nice looks, lovely expensive looking interior, but the suspension was an absolute dog on the 1.8T I drove years ago, it was a complete scrabble wagon - had no poise at all. Guess its okay, if you're driving on the motorway I suppose. If they stuck an A3 body and interior onto a Focus chassis, it would be a world beater.

Are the lesser powered models more fluid to drive?
