Replacing an E46...than another E46?

Keep your BMW. Use the extra £1000 to run it. Simple

That's about 3.5 months worth of petrol.....

-------------------------Petrol Diesel
Cost to buy------------ 0 1000
Miles Per Gallon (MPG)-- 27 40
Cost per litre----------- 100 103
Annual milage---------- 21000
Fuel cost per year------ 3531 2314
Fuel saving per year with diesel car 1217
Break even (years)----- 0.82

errrr

How is 3.5 months £1000 if 12months fuel is £1217 extra?

compare like with like. It's approximately 10months worth of the "extra" fuel.

golf gt-tdi ?, the 110ps 5 speed will do around 65 mpg if you drive around 70-80 mph

i'd like one myself, i cant justify diesel for 6000 miles per year

Give me your 323 and I give you my 318, simple solution really and both parties are happy!

Turbo failure on the 2.0 is common place according to the members on BMWLand, I too would avoid based on that.

Just read up on it at BMWLand....those 320 diesels are absolutely lemons!!!!

£5000, £8000, £10,000 etc engine repair bills are absolutely shocking. And not isolated cases either.

I'm absolutely amazed that BMW manage to produce such a fundamentally flawed engine / turbo / inlet manifold with such shocking reliability.

:eek::eek::eek:

Its not the engine or the manifold, it's purley their crap use of a Garrett Turbo. Had they stuck with the Mitsubishi unit like MGR were telling them to do, all would have been well.

But no, zee Germans yet again, loose another war :)

But Garretts have been around for donkey's years - from the days of Escorts Turbos and such like and not particularly known for failure are they? Could BMW not be bothered to spend money on decent parts and instead chose to buy bargain bucket el cheapo components? If so, very worrying for a 'prestige' car maker.

BMW have lost compared to MGR? lol

I'm cringing through my teeth to reccomend this... but I used to do the weekend trek from london to Leeds for a wench, and I found a fast train to leeds that took little over an hour - even with a connecting train to harrogate surely this would be faster than schleping up the M1 every friday.

No, MGR chose the more reliable turbo for the M47R unit after spotting early reliability issues with the Garret on the M47. Hardly guessing, its fact. However, MGR chose to use the Garrett unit on the Freelander TD4 for its variable geometrey to help shift the fat **** but the engine has a far lower output. This shows that BMW reached the limit of the turbo at around 160bhp.

During the R60 concept, MGR boffs repeateadly advised BMW boffs that the Garrett turbo was not fit for the job due to inefficient cooling. BMW ignored.

White Papers from Steyr, who, incidentally, spec'd the engine originally with a Mitsi turbo.

I'm sure some of these are available online. I'll take a look

You could get a Alfa 156 1.9/2.4 JTD well within your budget, but prepare for potential reliability problems.

Other than that, you'll have to lose your scuples and look at Golfs, Focii, Mondys and Passats :p

Just to defend the "crappy" 320d, my brother in law's previous e46 320d was @ 160k when he got rid of it for his current Merc, nothing ever went wrong with it in those 160k miles and it had been used as a "pool car" & well ragged by most of the drivers who had it!
