I bought my first ever flat screen widescreen TV just for this game on Gamecube back in the day. It was a Hitachi and it was *****.

It looked so much better on a CRT TV but I was naive in those days and thought flat and new = bettttorrr!

I played it on my 28" as I recall 4:3 CRT. Was very happy with that TV. I had a 5.1 surround sound nicely mounted in my room also. Good times :)

I had a JVC 32" widescreen CRT TV before then. Looking back it was superb. I remember getting an RGB switch box and cables for my PS2 and Gran Turismo looked incredible. God I wish I'd kept that TV now as I've gone on a retro binge recently (I left it in a bedroom side wall space as it was too heavy to bring when we moved house years ago!)

Been playing RE4 2005 again on Steam for comparison, non modded. They did a fantastic job of making the 2023 version a lot like what the mind's eye remembers in terms of how much better graphics have got. The reality of the original is so much more basic and stark looking, the camera panning is so jarring at first as well, the 2023 version is so smooth and detailed, some of the bosses are going to be a major upgrade.

But the 2005 version even without mods is still a great game, Leon is even funnier in it early game but that's likely due to totally changing the cut scenes. Back in 2004 on Gamecube it was one of the best games on any platform to date, loved the Wii version too though was easier with the remote aiming.

Ultimate HD edition on PC is good too with the mods/tweaks, RE4VR on Quest is great too.

Yep got that too :D
Never really bothered to play it though, and then I heard about the remaster coming out so that made me even less inclined.

I'm not really a big fan of all these remasters/ remakes really, as it stinks of stalled century and demonstrates how creatively moribund the entire entertainment industry has become. I will make an excpetion for this, and Silent Hill 2 though - the remake of that is looking superb. Oh, and Metroid Prime Remastered - that's how you do it!

For the purists, fixed camera mod/ demo! I have no idea how this can be done, very impressiiiiive....

interesting question there, we have remasters/remakes dominating the top of the charts on metacritic, what does that say for new IP and devs coming up with new stuff going forwards, how much longer can remakes and remasters sustain the gaming industry... Valve better not get ideas and do a remake of HL or something, we want HL3 :p

One thing for sure, more ports to PC from past console exclusives would be amazing. If Nintendo got onboard and decided that various old console games were worthy of coming to PC with modern engine tech fully supported, what a time that would be.

Anyone interested in the PC HD remake from 2014 (which is a bit lacklustre really and not very "HD") - I didn't realise there was a further massive mod that really amps up the textures and models. You can see and get it here https://www.re4hd.com/
