My favourite Resident Evil game. Probably the game that i have played and completed most in my time playing games. From the showcase it looks great I do hope that they do keep it faithful to the original but modernise it with up to date game elements and it looks like they have done so i guess we will have to see what other changes/improvements they have done, the control method is top priority for me as i tried to play the HD Version recently on PS5 and it felt almost as clunky as the tank controls. Apparently they have ditched the, pretty much universally hated, Ashley escort missions or at least toned them down or made it so she isn't as annoying.

I love RE4, so I can see myself buying this.

Only complaint was that chainsaw parry.
Yeah RE4 was a bit silly, but that's right up there with rock punching RE5. :p

I hope they don't remove too much, because the original was quite a long game, and received well, quite a task to re imagine it, RE 3 remake although i enjoyed my time with it, it was still a dissapointment, 2 many cut scenes and removed content, although this RE 4 footage does look good so far, i hope it turns out good !!!

I think I saw a headline in the last few days where the team said it would be about the same length as the original.

Yeah, as much as I enjoyed RE 3 Remakes, it was by far the worst remake of the lot. Super lazy effort. Was essentially a cash grab.

I said this before, but all they had to do was keep everything that was in the original, add a bit more to it and make Nemesis pop out randomly. That would have made it much better and encouraged more playthroughs. Instead we got on the rails cutscene rubbish.

huge resi fan best game, but did 4 need a remake over code v or alike its been remastered and remade to death already. ive not so long gone through the vr version which is great btw but are they only remaking the numbered games? seems so.

My main worry at the moment is that it's too similar to the OG. Don't get me wrong, I don't want a new game from the ground up. But we haven't seen anything new yet... I hope there are at least a few surprises!

They just need to look at the original remake. That’s how you make a remake. Keep everything and add a few things to it. Still annoyed at what they did with Resident Evil 3 Remake. Even Resident Evil 2 Remake to be honest. Could have been so much better and offered more replayabilty had they got it right.

Will you buy it day one (at a high price) then play it 6 months later? :p

Unless I am confused that what you did with RE Village. Did you ever complete that by the way? :)

Haha well remembered! Yeah a GPU fail and life got in the way… but I did get there:

Being one of the biggest RE fans around, I’m sure you are all absolutely dying to know what I made of number 8. I had it on release day but I was only able to get round to it over new year! Ridiculous!

I went in pretty much 100% blind…. and I thoroughly enjoyed Village. It was exactly as I wanted: a hybrid of RE4 and RE7. I think the cocktail of horror / treasure hunting / weapon upgrading / spooks was probably the most appealing it has ever been to me and I would very much like the same going forward, albeit with better execution as there were some things that are a little off (especially on repeated play-throughs):

Far more playful with wider and traditional horror/monster lore. We have werewolf’s, vampires and ‘ghosts’ (in the form of hallucinations). I really enjoyed that they expanded from the now extremely tired ‘zombies by another name’. Zombies are so overrated anyway.

Lycans are a decent, dangerous core enemy - show strength, intelligence and agility.

The four ‘lords’ were like a silly, fun ‘universal classic monsters’ version of the Baker family from RE7.

The RE4 treasure hunting and weapon upgrading is back. Yes! Oh god, yes. The hunting for treats and treasures is most fun. Speaking of which…

The Duke - marvellous character. Odd, weird, unexplainable… I particularly enjoyed his line about the dead body having a good waistline.

Castle lady was terrifying! Her daughters were recreations of ‘Hookman’ from RE3.5, if anyone is familiar with that.

Decent humour and fan service sprinkled in, particularly when Heisenberg calls Chris a Boulder puncher
:D

Superb ridiculousness at times - I had to pause as I was laughing uncontrollably at the reveal of the ludicrous tank vehicle you get to drive.

The castle section was sublime. The factory and village areas were also very good.

Excellent ‘special enemy’ encounters with the four footed werewolves and giant axe-men.

Not a truly solid story but it was an intriguing journey. I’m sad that Ethan is now out of the story.

Beautiful graphics and amazing audio, particularly the audio down in the dungeons in the castle when the female enemies spawn and the music swells in… terrifying.

There are quite lengthy ‘set piece’ sections of the game that take you away from the ‘meat’ of the good experience. The puppet section is tense when you don’t know what’s coming but it then feels a bit of a ‘creep chore’ on replays. The ‘fish section’ seems extravagant but isn’t hugely exciting… more fighting enemies, please. This wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the game was not…

…too short. It feels about half the length of RE4 (probably closer 2/3). If there was, maybe, a second village added to the map, or another ‘castle section’, the world would feel so much bigger. It upsets me on replays that nothing can touch the early ‘castle section’. I was thinking, and hoping, that every section would be just as involved.

The Chris section at the end of the game is so redundant. No treasure hunting, too much ammo, macho action music and ‘Navy Seals’ airdrops and weaponry…. Just, no. Please keep this out of the series as far as possible. The Heisenberg boss fight was a silly, laughable spectacle that I enjoyed but it felt like another chore on a replay when I knew there were few good bits remaining of the game from that point.

Please also keep the ‘conspiracy / agency’ stuff far away from the series too. I don’t care for the BSAA / corrupt organisation things. I don’t want to hear about ‘classified’ information or anything like that, it’s extremely generic and very boring.

*RE7 spoiler below*

Nothing got my adrenaline pumping and intrigue on max alert quite like the surprise move to the boat in RE7… which was a huge woooooah moment.

Even though it was subsequently explained, the reattachment of the hand was a bit too silly at the time.

If only the game was as substantial as RE4… phwoar, can you imagine.

For a first time play-throughough, brilliant, flaws revealed on replays. Definitely the right balance of what I want to see - I’m just wishing and willing them to increase the abundance of the good bits for number 9.

Good times
:)

Give me the RE4 super limited “comes with Leon’s jacket” edition :D

I actually looked at buying a replica of that once. Then realised I’d just look like a fat, bald Leon that had really let go :o :D

Haha. Nice review. I agree with it for the most part. Definitely agree that the game is not as good on the second replay. That baby bit is so creepy and as you say a chore.

Where does the game fit in your RE game line up? :)

Here is my current ranking. I added in bold where I am expecting Resident Evil 4 Remake to slot in :)

1- Resident Evil Remake
2- Resident Evil 2
3- Resident Evil: Code Veronica
4- Resident Evil 3
5- Resident Evil 2 Remake
6- Resident Evil 4 Remake
7- Resident Evil 0
8- Resident Evil Village
9- Resident Evil 3 Remake
10- Resident Evil 4
11- Resident Evil 7
12- Resident Evil 5
13- Resident Evil: Revelations
14- Resident Evil: Revelations 2
15- Resident Evil 6

There were some disasters in the RE series like 6, outbreaks, racoon city and the movies not too bad until you get to welcome to racoon city which was utterly terrible. I wish they would remake CV but though rumours and talk of it, like silent hill 1 they lost some of the source code so why did not remake it yet.

If it is a remake, why do they need the source code of the original? Should be made from scratch I would imagine?

I still hold a small hope they do it eventually. I certainly would much rather Code Veronica remake than a RE5 remake which does not need a remake in my opinion.

What I would like at this point is a Code Veronica remake followed by a remake of the original, or should I say a remake of the original remake on a brand new engine with graphics set to 11 :D
