Resident Evil Remake HD

As someone who preordered and then stood in a queue on release day to pick up his copy of Resident Evil for the original Playstation, and who has also played every game in the series, I can categorically say that RE4 is the best game in the series.

Not only that, it's one of the best, if not the best game of all time.

And although I was hyped to play Leon again, RE6 was a travesty of a game in all departments, it was shockingly bad.

Only thing that I found memorable about resident evil 4 was the merchant. "howdy stranger, whatcha buyin... Whatcha sellin...". Me and my brother say those lines randomly until today. The rest of the game was forgettable. The monster were not zombies, the game was mainly set outside as I recall. Just did not enjoy the story at all.

I also played and enjoyed the original games and prefer Resident Evil 6 over all.. so I think my opinion is just as valid :). I think what this shows it that Resident Evil fans like the franchise for lots of different reasons and so its harder to make one game in the franchise that will appeal to everyone... unlike say something like GTA where its pretty obvious what everyone wants.

I'm not sure how Resident Evil 4 can be thought of as largely better than Resident Evil 6 though unless were talking as a product of their respective times. The environments wernt as varied and the cast was hit or miss (but I did enjoy it a lot though overall).

Just for fun this is how id rate them bearing in mind recent playthroughs;

Resident Evil 6 > Resident Evil 2 > Resident Evil 1/Remake > Resident Evil 4 > Resident Evil:CV > Resident Evil 3 > Resident Evil 5.

I am suprised to hear that. But yeah you are right, does seem the audience is more split than I thought. I thought pretty much anyone who played the games from day one would enjoy the original formula, not what it has become.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. For me if resident evil 7 does not head in the direction of revelations I will just pick it up on steam sale for a fiver. But I am confident that they have learnt not to make this episodic chapter bull they been doing lately. Just give me one story line, not 4.

RE4 was far truer to the RE series (and the games preceding it) than RE5 or 6 were. RE4 at least still contained puzzles of some description, RE6 was just an all-out action game.

I've not fully played a Resident Evil since 1+2 it all went a bit too arcadey for my liking, the original formula was spot on don't know why they felt the need to change it into yet another generic 3rd person shooter.

Same thing happened with Dead Space. First game was superb and immensely atmospheric, the sequels were poor by comparison and the third one is just a co-op orientated alien-shooter with some creepy music played over the top.

iirc its sold a lot better since changing to the RE4 3D perspective, also when RE4 came out there was nothing else similar, like it or not most modern 3rd person games are a clone of it in one way or another, not the other way around.

Thats harsh on DS2, maybe not as many jump scares as DS1, but its a far slicker incarnation of the clunky original.
RE DS3, agreed. couldn't even finish it.

I bought a Gamecube back when this was re-released for the RE titles alone. This will be a day one purchase for me.

Now all we need is a Silent Hill remake and I'll be a very happy bunny.

I still think Code Veronica and 2 are the best, those Dreamcast lighting effects sure were impressive!

CV had some very cool moments. Looking forward to this re-remake and I hope Capcom take Resident Evil back to a more horror focused route instead of third person action.

When playing Resident Evil 1 the thing that impressed me the most was just being dumped in a creepy mansion and not really knowing exactly what is going on, very creepy. (especially the remake)

...not looking forward to those spiders.

I've said it all a million times. The gushing below might make you sick.

The point I want to re-emphasise today is that anyone saying that CV is good should go back and play it. It's aged really badly. The backtracking is absurd!!!

Having just completed it again, I can say with confidence that Resident Evil 4 is the best video game I have ever played. It just blows almost everything right out the water. Every section of the game poses a new challenge, there is just so much variety in the level design, even if you are essentially still laying waste to zombies and monsters left right and centre. Off the top of my head, the highlights include the incredible opening scene in the village, the hedgemaze and the bosses... oh my god the bosses!!!!! They are just incredible.

And furthermore, the game just keeps on going and going, so much damn effort must have gone into making this game because it never feels repetitive and always keeps you on your toes.

I played a bit of Red Dead Redemption over xmas and was impressed, but to me it's not even in the same league. I only mention this as RDR was IGN's game of the year. Here's the IGN review where they gave RE4 a whopping 98%:

If you haven't played through it yet, you really need to, absolute genius.
Couldn't find a particularly recent thread worth bumping so thought I might as well start a new one. I've dusted off the dreamcast and have been playing through a few of the old Resident Evil games, which means I have played each of the major RE games in the last year or so.

I just this instant finished RE2 as Leon... god damn that was easy, I remember it being much harder. Finished the game with a billion healing items and didn't even reload my magnum... all within 4 hours without knowing what I was doing. Going to start the game up with Claire soon, I never managed to finish her scenario because Mr. X terrified me as a teenager.

I also played through most of Code Veronica again, which I'm now placing at the bottom of the bundle along with Nemesis. It's just really boring and plays too slowly. Far too many huge treks back and forth the island base and the Antarctica mission is dull. To make matters worse, it makes you do practically the same thing with Chris. I never finished CV back in the day and I can see why now. But it is a lot harder than RE2. It also has the worlds most annoying boss fight, the tyrant in the back of the plane - can't really avoid his attacks and should you land against a wall the chances are it's instadeath because he blocks you in. Having lots of healing items and just shooting something until it dies, with little way of escaping his instadeath move, does not make a fun boss fight! Grrrr :p

Resident Evil 4 is by miles, absolutely miles the best in the series and in my humble opinion the greatest video game ever made. RE0, despite being a great game in itself showed the formula needed evolving and RE4 delivered on every single level. I disbelieve anyone who said they weren't scared when the 'right hand man' boss battle began :D

RE5 was an utter mess, completely *******ised what was good about RE4.

So, the best games in order for me go:
1. RE4
2. REmake
3. RE0
4. RE2
5. RE5
6. RECV/RE3

In terms of scariness:
1. RE0
2. REmake
3. RE4
4. RE2
5. RE3
6. RECV
7. RE5

In terms of difficulty:
1. REmake
2. RE0
3. RE4
4. RE3
5. RE:CV
6. RE:2
7. RE:5

This isn't an exact copy of the first, as there are new areas etc. New enemies too. But it's very similar? I never got all the way through it. But it differs to the first quite a bit. I remember having to set fire to zombie corpses for some reason too.

If you didn't set fire to the corpses when you come back to revisit the mansion later they become bad ass crimson heads! Loved this game to bits and was such an unusual game to appear on the Gamecube at the time (constantly ridiculed as a kiddy console). I still have the full Gamecube collection which I sometime play on my wii with my wavebird. Infact i might start them again if I can find my memory card!

Every man and their dog wants a Remake of 2 yet they do a remake of a remake. My guess is this is going to be a re-model of characters only as everything in the game is pre rendered backgrounds (partially the reason the game looked and still looks so fantastic now). renovating all of those will take a bit of time if they even bother to do it.

I wonder whether the more modern gamers will have the patience to deal with tank controls, item management, puzzles and not being able to save every 1 second!

I also loved CV:X. Some games need to be played in the era to feel how great they were. Super Mario World brings back so many warm feelings yet if I went back now I would be bored in ten minutes.

Remake, RE2, CV:X are my top 3. RE4 is a masterpiece of a game without a shadow of a doubt but a resident evil game it is not.

Well said. Can't agree more. This probably why I don't have fond memories of RE4.

Oh and Nitefly, I played RE:CV not so long ago and really enjoyed it. It still felt like what I would call a resident evil game. RE4 feels hardly anything like a resident evil. Still it was much better than RE5 and 6 though.

I played it last year, and it was still fantastic .

Then again, you think RE4 is the best in the series, so what do you know ;).

For me the RE series i loved so much ended after CV and 0. While RE4 is a stunning game and very well made Capcom went onto a different path to accommodate i feel for the next gen of gamers (A COD generation).

No longer are the days you had trek half the map to defeat a mid level boss to aquire a key that would open a door that you first saw when you started the game. A feature that you would find in such classics like Zelda etc.

Ah the good old days!

For me:

RE2
RE1 + Remake
RE0
RE:CV
RE3
RE4
RE5
RE6

Resident Evil 4 was very good but for me it was also the start of the downfall for Resident Evil games. I know many people won't agree with me here and it could just be nostalgia on my part but i'd love a new resident Evil game in the style of 1 to 3 with tank controls and atmosphere.

My Favorite game of all time is the REmake, gutted its not next gen before xmas, i may end up double dipping and grabbing ps3 then rebuying

Real Resident evil games, in order of awesomeness -REmake, RE2, RE:CV, Original RE, RE3.

Action games with a hint of resi, iooa - RE4, RE5

Junk pile - RE0, RE6

I tried to play RE0 a few times but just couldn't get on with it. It was like they were running out of ideas with the scorpion boss and setting it on a train... Plus the removal of the item boxes and just having to drop items and go back for them was a chore and seemed like a pointless addition.

I've just started a playthrough of RE3 and it's crazy how easy it actually is. I remember playing when I was a kid and being genuinely worried about ammo, healing items and taking on most enemies. Now that I have a good few years worth of playing some of the tougher games this feels like a cake walk.

I'm playing from memory but I'm now up to the clock tower, I have about 6 mixed herbs, 5 first aid sprays, a few hundred pistol bullets, nearly a hundred shotgun rounds, magnum with good ammo, grenade launcher with good ammo..... I really wish they had made an actual hard mode, this could have been one of the best in the series if the challenge was there. I'm playing for the story now and once I'm done I think I'll pass on this one in future because I don't want to spoil my memory of it.

3 was the easiest of the 1-3 arc, but i have to agree going back to any of the ps1 titles now are really easy

If you guys want a challenge then the original Resident Evil has a version called Director's Cut which has an 'Arrange Mode'. It basically replaces all the item locations and randomizes what goes where.
