Respected Windows 7 Tweaks

Are you sure it wasn't something else being blocked? I have never had an issue with lag playing CS:S or anything else on any XP, Vista or 7 with the firewall running.

my fav tweak is in msconfig > boot > advanced options > Number of Processors > 4 in my case (depends on CPU), this makes it start up using all the processors, iirc by default window's only uses one :)

Thats a debunked myth. That setting is only used to limit windows to use only X processor cores.

Windows is designed by default to use all logical cores on the processor. Its default is unticked for max cores.

Sorry to say, it seems your favourite tweak does absolutely nothing.

Since owning 7 I haven't felt the need to make any tweaks. The only change I've made is having the taskbar on the right, but that's a personal preference.

Enabling No GUI Boot stops showing the Windows logo animation during boot and speeds up boot time anywhere between 5 and 15 seconds.

MSConfig > Boot > No GUI Boot

I'll have to try out the windows animation tip. I couldn't get my boot time below 45 seconds but that's on a perpendicular HDD.

Here's a nice tool. I wouldn't really consider it a tweak but it allows you to view all your control panel options in one window pane.

Dunno if you guys get annoyed having to click through 9 menus in the control panel just to get to your windows settings.

If you make a new folder and rename it this:
God-Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Then the folder will change icon and when you click on it you'll see every configuration option available in the control panel. It takes all the toggles you have to dig through the control panel menus and sub-menus to get to and puts them right in one master list. It's worth trying out God Mode just to see settings you may not have even been aware of.

You could pin the control panel to the task bar then pin jump lists to it making access just as easy too!

I also move My Documents to a non-OS HDD.

I've never intentionally placed personal files on the OS HDD in case it screws up, gets infected, system needs a refresh or the HDD dies and you need to reinstall windows.

Using Readyboost on an external USB pen (has to be a fast one) is the only thing in Windows 7 I've actually noticed a difference after doing

this is very hardware dependant..

It only makes a difference on systems with a low amount of ram (<= 2GB), and on systems with an SSD as the primary drive it can actually be a bottleneck (swap reads are far faster from an SSD than from a USB pen drive).

I just use the Windows Search. If I want to, say, change adapter settings I just search for "adapter" or "view network" and Bob's your uncle.

Jump list is great if you use the same Control Panel item a lot.

Aye My most common ones are:

Uber handy for quick access :)

i disabled everything to do with microsoft that was not needed.

if you go to default programs and remove system software, i removed IE8, media player etc. pretty much everything that list was removed except one or two things.

Then i disabled all the services that i don't need about 5-8 services. including security center non sense. bit locker and bit defender.

I disabled all the windows indexing and search functionality and will just use the search that is at the top right of explorer which searches without indexing. Works fast enough for me.

Why not just go back to Windows 95 :D

Some people just don't realise that it's all wasted effort when windows 7 runs just as slick anyway.

what i would like is for the windows 7 taskbar is to have a option that the taskbar items are small like it is when you have grouping on, but not to combine them.

so have squares with no text but no grouping. i just do not see why microshaft have to be so difficult and not have customize options for simple things like that.

how does it get through testing ?

they must ask some windows 7 fan boys to test it who don't moan about a thing. like asking the guys from gizmodo to test an apple product. They won't find any bugs cause they are so blind in love with steve jobs...

Also what is seriously lacking is per windows properties, full window transparency and "always on top" settings for each windows. I mean other OS had this 10 years ago i don't see why MS can't do it when some 3rd party apps do it perfectly.

I seriously think they have the wrong people testing their operating systems.

There really isn't anything on Windows 7 to tweak, in my opinion. I haven't tweaked my installation since I installed it last October.

I'd rather sacrifice those 5 to 15 seconds for the eye candy :p I don't often shut down my computer though. It's often sleeping.

I agree.
