Retro console and games thread

Yeah I couldn't believe how bad it was to get close to a decent frame rate (didn't remember it to look like that as a kid). Still a fun game to play.

Would love to replace my pal collection with nstc, doubt I'd ever get some of the classics in the boxed condition I have currently though (Zelda MM, Donky Kong 64 and Smash Bros among others have perfect boxes and Conkers BFD with a box at all goes for sill money).

Planning to get a copy of indiana jones and the infernal time machine on the 64 soon, sadly that will be cartridge only (boxed is over £100 which is too far) and it'll have to be nstc, only ever seen one pal version from Australia years ago :( (wish I had spent the £60 on it then, and I think it was Australian though it was before I went to uni when I saw it on ebay)

Prices for Conkers bad fur day are insane, even cart only is expensive. At least it's a RARE game, so the pal version is fine.

Switching over to NTSC is not costing me too much. I'm not a collector, so not bothered about the box, as long as the game works, I'm happy. Been pretty cheap so far.

NTSC console + accessories (psu, expansion pack, controllers & memory card) was £28 and the cart only games have all been between £5-10. Looking like Majora's mask will cost me £30 though and I'm not even going near Conkers bad fur day, cost is too much for me.

We were probably in some of the same shops yesterday then !

I also seen the hulk for gamecube in a charity shop in newcastle, agreed the prices were high for most games, I was disappointed.

Ye I seen that in heart foundation , I can understand they must pay silly rent for there shop in eldon square.

Why does everyone want a NTSC console over a PAL one?

Most PAL conversions suck, because the companies were lazy and couldn't be bothered to do a proper job. So the game runs slower and has black borders. Some like RARE, done a proper job, so their PAL games are fine, but most suck.

Example of a shocking conversion, Wave race 64,look how slow it is

Don't have to have a NTSC console though. Earlier consoles 50/60Hz is hardware controlled, so you can mod them to output 60Hz and force games to run full screen & speed. Later consoles are software controlled and some games have 60Hz option, so as long as you stick to them and for the ones that don't, get NTSC versions of the game, then it's fine.

Conkers bfd amazes me because I bought it for £30 just after the 64 was ended and its now worth double that.

Those prices make the switch seem pretty good! Wouldn't be too fussed on MM or OTT just because they both ran well enough on pal (most proper nintendo games were ok too for me). Some games just were dreadful, the video of wave race made me laugh as quite a few games played and handled like that (v-rally was a terrible one as well as beetle adventure and the xwing game).

Might save up some cash and give it a whirl just to play mystical ninja 2 properly (as well as sin and punishment and the dream game of infernal time machine).

What, £10.49 + £2.00 p&p for 10? You're having a laugh right? Be cheaper to buy plastic containers at poundland.

for just over £1 each and they fit perfect and are very strong. To keep your boxes from getting tatty i think they are worth the money.what are these plastic containers from pound land surely they are going to be £1 any ways and at least with these they fit your game box's perfect

Well I suppose you pays your money and all that.

Well, received my Mega CD. Lovely bit of Kit and Sonic Megamix is astounding for an unofficial hack. Sadly my machine seems a bit iffy (occasional crashes and read errors) but the seller has very kindly offered to exchange it. The price you pay for buying old CD based hardware I guess! :p

Got all the cables through for when I get my 32x, just waiting for that to arrive. Already received Virtua Racing Deluxe and I have Space Harrier and Metal Head on the way from Japan. Damn pleased with myself right now as I just won Knuckles Chaotix too :D Nearly paid as much for it as I did the 32x ($38 USD which is about £25 I think) but it is the main reason for having a 32x really. NTSC goodness too, although I have to admit for most games the 50/60hz thing doesn't bug me too much.

For anyone else wanting to get a 32x I'd go for it. The main problem before was getting the patch cable that connected the MegaDrive to the 32x but they seem to be incredibly easy to get on eBay now. Furthermore, people are making high quality ones for the original MegaDrive that takes the stereo sound from the headphone jack instead of the mono output from the AV socket which is really cool . All in all I think I've probably spent less on the 32x hardware than I did for the Mega CD which is somewhat surprising.

Sadly, being a student means that I'm having to sell some bits off to pay for this, although I am somewhat of a Sega fanboy so I'm not too bothered. Sold my N64; didn't get that good a price for it but ah well. Have a ton of stuff up on the MM right now if any of you are interested. Letting go of my Pokemon gameboy games among other goodies including some Super FX carts that I've overclocked. Doom and Stunt Race FX are finally playable! :D

Has anyone here used retr0bright? I'm very tempted to use it on my yellowing Dreamcast but I can't find any Hydrogen Peroxide.

Thanks, I'll be giving it ago over the next few weeks once I get can a clear run of sunshine. I'll be sure to be positing before and afters.

Discs are in good nick too. :)

They are really good fun, pretty much a hand held arcade machine :)

Theres about 8/9 games that are really outstanding on it that I can't wait to buy. The whole thing is still just about in sensible range price wise before it becomes a real collectors thing too (though game boxes are pricey and harder to come by).

A great christmas present from the gf this year.

That's the same colour as my ngpc. Hmm lemme have a look for it..... Right found it. Only got the 1 game though called Dark Arms.
What I will say is the stick and buttons on it are awesome.
