Retro console and games thread

Got the final bits I need for my switchless SNES mod ordered and will hopefully be here on Tuesday. I've had the chip for months now but never got round to ordering the LEDs or the resistors. Just gotta hope the chip programmed correctly (and I programmed the right file :p).

anyone made a mame cabinet from those diy flat pack bar top kits you can get on ebay?

I was going to try and make a mame bartop or make a cabinet to put my mvs into but not sure how hard it would be to do.I bought a mvs arcade last year but the monitor is broken and tbh it was way too big for anywhere i could keep so i took out the mvs and stored the arcade in the shed.I was thinking about making a small bartop to put the mvs in and maybe get one of those multi carts for it but i am just not sure how hard it would be to make a bartop with one

i have a full size cabinet but they are just way to big and bulky,i would love to have a small bartop cab like this

The guy sells the diy flat packs for about £170 , just not sure if its worth just making a mame Bar top cabinet and forgetting the MVS i have.

Make sure you sit the chip in a place where you can still get the top metal shield on. I didn't the first time and had to do it over as the metal shield acts as a stop for eject. No metal shield and eject slams into one of the PPU.

Yeah, I was thinking about that before when I was lifting up the CIC pins.

Switchless Snes? Whats that about?

It allows you to play pretty much any game no matter what region or what kind of lockout chip it has and allows you to choose between 50/60Hz without the need for any switches.

I nearly went with the exact same kit a few years back but already had a bartop at the time so went with a cocktail style cab kit. I would imagine they are fine, just make sure they are durable enough for your needs.

With regards to the MVS, if your dead set on doing it I would have a look over on the BYOAC forums - I'm not sure if you can buy ready done harnesses for the MVS or need to make your own. Personally, I would just go Mame with decent parts.

Firstly guys I really want a SNES but am really struggling to find one that's a reasonable price on the bay :(

Any hints on this front? Really want to play classic Zelda and a few others.

is it worth me picking up a dreamcast?? I've never played one but would quite like to have a go at retro gaming and like the idea of shenmue and jet set radio. Are there many quintessential games to be played on it?

Is there anything i should look out for when buying one?

I'm choosing dreamcast because my mates got a gamecube, i had a n64 and don't really fancy going back any further generations.

Dreamcast is an amazing console! I got a working one (after my second died) for about £20 with a few pads and games. Cheap and brilliant fun.

Jet Set Radio and Shenmue are key games, along with crazy taxi, power stone, skys of arcadia, soul calaber. mr driller, sega bass fishing, sonic adventure 1 and 2, metropolis street racer, chu chu rocket and house of the dead 2 (theres quite a few other games to look out for including an arcade zombie game and a lot of n64 ports that look better like Rayman 2).

A really good console to have a look into as most things for it (apart from the vga unit) are still fairly easy to pick up and aren't too expensive.

I know it isn't exactly retro (then again it's basically on the same level as the PS2) but has anyone had any experience with using a VGA cable with the Wii and if so does it look better than component?

Thought I'd post my Super Famicom collection for those interested:

Loads of Games mostly Jap imports also includes a sealed Puzzle Bobble and Final Fight 2:

Well I have just come across this thread in the last few days and have loved trawling through it! Going to have to dig out all my old stuff and get it up here.

Atari 2600 + loads of games
Megadrive 2 + quite a few games (remember selling a few back in the day so not sure what's left)
PSX + loads of games
Gamecube with MGS-TTS, Resident Evil, Resident Evil Zero, Mario Cart Double Dash and Need for Speed Underground 2.

Now thinking of a N64 and some games... I always wanted one but when I walked into woolies with my money (£100) It would only get me a PSX with no games as the N64 with Goldeneye was £130, so I made do with the demo disk with Abe's Odyssey etc then I got the registration Demo and that lasted me 3+ months until I could get my first game, Toca Touring cars! Great times were had!

Anyway is an N64 going to look awe full on a 42" plasma?
