Retro console and games thread

Well I got the LEDs today and it lights up correctly when holding the reset button so it seems the chip programmed fine but the screen is still garbled but looking like it's trying to do something. I'm thinking it could have something to do with the PPUs at this point so I'll try redo that part.

I bet one is not switching, one at 50Hz & one at 60Hz. CIC has nothing to do with the output, so it won't be that.

Redid it and still doesn't work :(. There must be a damaged trace somewhere as there doesn't seem to be any bridging anywhere and all solder points looks fine to me. I've gone and bought another console for 15 quid from ebay which has completely damaged casing but is still functional and since I already have a case that's not an issue :p.

Ahh, the expansion pak is an extra 4MB of system RAM to bring the total up to 8MB from 4MB. The stock pak in the system is basically a dummy that terminates the signal so the system only uses onboard RAM. Some games will use the expansion pak either to run in a higher resolution or to improve frame rate etc. Some games such as Perfect Dark require the pak and won't run without it.

/pedant mode

Perfect Dark only needed the expansion pack for bots and co-op missions ;) single player and 4 player death match (no bots) were fine without the pack (something along those lines anyway).

Only Majoras Mask and Donkey Kong 64 really needed it. Maybe Conkers BFD and a few other later games but its a stretch to remember off the top of my head...

/no more pedant mode (not really needed)

Would love to RGB mod my 64, that or get a proper nstc one for a few games... My original pal one doesn't look that great these days sadly.

Have box and manual as well.

No idea what them weird patterns in the gold are. They seem to show up in most pictures I find of the carts online and only really visible under camera flash or bright light.

Picked up a brand new unopened Dreamcast keyboard yesterday for £3. Not really sure why as I'm not sure there is anyway of using it but a nice collectible nevertheless. Also have a supergun on it's way to me and an arcade MVS motherboard. Would love to get an AES console but the price was too high back in the day and it's not much better now, so I will have to stick to the MVS carts.

Just 2 games today, went into a local 2nd hand shop and seen a fair few master system games (hardly ever see them) and since my friend gave me one a while ago thought id pick a couple up, dont know whats good on the master system and what to look out for so just picked up a couple that looked fun for £2 each complete.

Also any advice on good games for the system would be good.

went back to that shop today and had a good look and picked these ones up

Isn't the sticker meant to be holographic?

Shocktroopers was release on MVS but not AES. So that's another cool reason to own a MVS. I use AES arcade sticks with my Supergun so I am has good has playing on a AES. I installed a Unibios chip too so I can switch between Arcade or Console mode and change regions to get rid of any censorship etc. :D

The two slot MVS motherboards have a memory card slot too. You have to wire one up to the one, four and six slot MVS motherboards. Hope this info helps.

I haven't actually paid for the MVS board yet as its coming into my local video game shop. They also have a 4 slot, so do you think that may be better? I will probably install the unibois and grab myself a 160 in 1 cart until I build up a good collection.

I have a four slot myself. Pressing select on the AES arcade stick switches through the games. I have a Single slot MVS in my Neo Geo MVS cab with the 161 in 1 cartridge in it. With the games on it running on original hardware they run great too. Saves me going inside all the time to switch games. :D

I still buy original carts too.

I think the memory card allows you too save mid game and carry on latter. So not that important I guess.

This is how mines setup

Ahh my mistake. Can you buy FPGAs that convert the digital output? That was the only other way I could find to get RGB from an N64

This is fpga > DVI-D/VGA will hopefully be finished this year. I assume MGC mentioned as a target event is the Midwest Gaming Classic on March 23rd.

Looks good. Are you sending the sound to those speakers? I've seen a mod where you can wire the sound into the scart cable but I'll probably just send it to some speakers.

Niceeee! Best 64 Zelda...

My uk version of the gold cart has done the paint warp thing, its just from the paint getting warm in the 64 when you play it (the directions are from where the heat vents too I think).

The holographic version was limited edition I think which would be very expensive to get hold of. Boxed and a manual for the regular edition is well worth it.

Picked up a Sega Saturn today the guy had it on the local bootsale was in a box with a couple playstations,i noticed the saturn controller and after rummaging around i found the saturn buried under loads of cables.I got it for £2 aswell was well chuffed with that, needed a good clean, not sure if its fully working but for £2 its worth a go and i got some playstation 2 games for £1 each so well happy

That's a very good price for the Saturn. Think I paid £20 for mine with a couple of games. Mine also has grey buttons not black. Didn't even realise there were different versions of the Saturn (except for different regions).

Edit; quick look on wiki shows that the game pad you have is the North American version. Is it a NTSC version of the console?
