Retro console and games thread

Well after months of keeping an eye on eBay for a UK based NTSC U/C PS One I finally snagged one for £20.00 + shipping! It's in immaculate condition and the joypad looks like it was never used! I can now finally play the US games that I kept hold of after selling all my other PAL PS1 stuff last year. I love the PS One its a tiny little console that takes up no room and for me, is way better than that ugly grey monster that came before it.

I was missing Final Fantasy 8 and managed to get a nice condition NTSC U/C copy for £16 delivered last week. The PS One looks stunning via my XRGB Mini, it really puts the PS3 to shame when it tries to run PS1 games.

Since the theme of the week is the PS1 I thought what the hell when I was in WH Smiths :)

Nice :). Always nice to see someone playing the proper versions of games instead of crappy 50hz PAL stuff.

I've been sifting through my "collection" wondering if I should get rid of it as I never use it- I don't have the space really :/

Would you keep it for when you do have the space, as decent working kit is sometimes hard to find (and worth more to a gamer than what I'd get selling it) or would you man up and ditch as I've haven't used any of this for a year or so...

I agree.
Sadly charity shops now base their prices off Ebay, which is really not what charity shops are all about!

I'm not singling you out personally as I've seen this posted time and time again, the point of a charity shop is to take in goods for little or no cost and to turn those goods into funding for organisations that require financial support.

What exactly is wrong with a charity shop selling an item for it's true value?

Isn't this just a case of collectors wanting the best deal possible and whinging about a once abundant source of bargains actually selling at the market rate?

I take my hat off to the shops that have got clued up staff who price things correctly, and I do practise what I preach, a young lass was selling a Gamecube with 2 original pads, all leads, Paper Mario and two other games for £15 collected, within ten mins I'd sent her links to completed sales from ebay showing her games were going for roughly £30-40 each.

Well personally i would keep it, having owned and gotten rid of a fair few consoles/retro computers and games while i was growing up and now wishing i still had it all. Would/will cost me a lot of money to get it back

Sure here are a few, the de-interlacing of the 480i games works a treat and I haven't seen PS1 games look so crisp since I played them on a CRT back in the 90s.

I'm really glad I kept some of the games (US versions) and replaced the choice PAL ones with the proper 60Hz versions. I love the artwork a lot more on the American games and you get fantastic full-colour manuals and tray inlay artwork.

Sadly my camera is out of battery so please excuse the iPhone shots, it looks way better in person

Final Fantasy VII - This is where its at, Square can shove the DRM laced Steam version up i........

Castlevania Symphony of the Night - 2d Sprite games of course look fantastic via the XRGB Mini.

Parasite Eve - The 2d Pre-rendered backgrounds looks stunning in person!

I recently managed to get a matching blue screen cover for my modded DMG GameBoy, I just noticed that the blue shell I have is identical in colour to a Japanese Super Gameboy 2 for the SNES ;)

Have a weird urge to start collecting Dreamcast games. I don't really know why but I think the awesome game cases play a part and often have some great artwork.

If you decide to sell the Dreamcast let me know please

Doesn't seem to be anything special, apart from silver! Its a bog standard scph 50004.

I like the gamecube! It's interesting! Jap originally called spiced orange :) Found it at a car boot sale!

There's actually two verisons of the ps2 phat that was released in the UK. I don't actually know the model numbers of the top of my head, but sony did release a limited edition silver one then later released a common silver one.

The only reason why I know this is cos I brought the limited edition on at time of release for a premium and felt very con'd when they release the normal silver one after, but I discovered a few years ago that the two silvers are different tones of sliver (from factory) and the limited edition one does sell for a lot more, if the seller and buyer reconise/understands it was a limited model.

EDIT: I think the limited silver one had the same model number of a black one but S at the end, while the common one had its own model number. I shall google and get the numbers. It's at my parents house at the moment.

I have the former "silver" one, bought it new back in the day...nope not selling it.

Your call really, the Dreamcast is an awesome machine and I'm so glad I kept mine from back in the day. Over the years I have got rid of some consoles, I really regret selling my original XBOX, some of the games particularly the SEGA ones were amazing. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gun Valkyrie, Shenmue 2 (English), Jet Set Radio Future to name a few....I miss them all and there is no way to emulate them at present :(

I had the silver resident evil 4 gamecube and a launch JAP PSP which i miss sometimes too.

Interesting! Thanks :)

Sadly it has no S, just SCPH-50004... it has a wee 'b' after and lower, but I don't think that means anything!

the lights on my Micro occasionally flashes red for an instant. I'm pretty sure that isn't low battery- any idea what it could be?

Edit- It is low battery as it just died on me :p

Is it just me, or are PS2 era game prices at a real bargain point at this moment?

It seems prices for classic 8 and 16 bit machines haven't been so high in ages, yet PS2 and Gamecube stuff can be had for next to nothing. Probably all the 30-somethings feeling nostalgic I guess.

FWIW I'm 29 and looking to get back into collecting a bit. Had a decent SEGA collection about ten years ago, but sold it. All of those pieces were well used, so really I would have started again anyway.

Currently got SMD1 and 2 and a Dreamcast. I've got some games for the Mastersystem, but no machine as yet (should be able to get one fairly easily). I've also found my original Xbox (and games), but I don't have any cables for it.
