Retro console and games thread

Is disc rot particularly vicious with respect to Dreamcast discs? I've just listened to a podcast highlighting this as a problem, with images of light shining through the discs, and now I'm a little worried to take a look at my small collection. They've been in a cupboard for the last 10 years, with no light and hopefully minimal moisture. Has anyone else had any issues with this? Any other platforms particularly bad?

Going by most dreamcasts I see, even keeping them in a vacuum sealed lead box in complete darkness will discolour them.

Mine has gone all yellow. Think I need another one but my Dreamcast is not a boxed one, it's one of the few items I have in less than ideal state.

I just think they were made from some of the most reactive plastic ever created. They're all yellow to some degree as far as I can see.

Just bought an absolute mint Vic20 with all the boxes and loads of bits on eBay for £139. I was a package, so boxes in boxes which is always good as the outer box takes the hit but the stuff inside is also boxed so looks like new and to be fair the outer box (containing Vic20/Tape Deck/Games/Stuff) is mint too.

:D

Sweet!! Pics when it arrives!

My Dreamcast is pretty yellow too and I bought it having been stored in its box for years. Was thinking of using one of the peroxide/retrobrite etc techniques on it but it’s got a few scuffs on it anyway.

I've used these in the past. Generally well regarded and I couldn't tell between connecting using the switch and direct to the TV.

Not cheap and only three SCART sockets, not sure if you could daisy chain two together.

Just paid for this one on eBay

Guess it's the same thing! I imagine I just need a rgb cable to link this to the tv now

Ahh that's the one! I think you showed me this in the past but I never got round to getting one, daisy chaining would be great.

Does this carry true RGB signal? I like the price :D

Well.. after plugging in my CPC 464 last night with the new cable I purchased a few weeks ago.. my TV flashed up in the corner "RGB", so I can only assume that it does indeed carry an RGB signal.

No worries it's bound to happen I guess! Currently it's in good white condition! It is noisy though! How noisy are your DC's?

Pretty darn noisy with the fan spinning and the laser tracking on the disc, it doesn’t make any abnormal sounding noises though, I know that’s a bit vague.

I seem to find different batches of plastics can yellow at different rates and some not at all (even on the same console) so maybe you’ve got lucky with yours.

Thanks I'm pretty sure that's what I'm experiencing with mine, I play with headphones anyway but it threw me a bit I thought it was faulty or something!
Really want to sit down and try Shenmue, picked up the sequel for Xbox over the weekend so seems like a good time

Is there any reason why an Xbox via RGB scart would give out a slightly softer blurry picture over that of a PS2 and GC with the same signal and tv?

Ps2 seems much sharper than my Xbox, maybe the cable is crap?

Somewhere in this thread is the technical explanation of plastic yellowing but in a nutshell it's the flame retardant chemical rising to the surface and you can buy/make your own bleach to strip it out the plastic.

It's all available from Amazon, I did think about it... but then I decided to ignore it and play on. :D

Decided I want a Japanese Saturn. Seen a few on ebay for around £100 with games so taking a punt.
Also seen a Japanese copy of Burning Rangers for under £30 but cant figure out if its worth it, I know the PAL version is £200 odd.
Any ideas?
