Retro console and games thread

Popped into my local Cash Convertors to grab a Gameboy Pocket I saw for £7.99 last week. But it was gone:(

On a lighter note I managed to pick up these while there for 50p each.

Afterbuner 2, James Pond 2 and Zomebies. a lot more cheaper than they are going for on the bay.

loved James Pond 2 but what's with the yellow bit? didn't it come off for something?

I think it was just because it meant they didn't have to pay for an official license to then make games for the system or something similar.

I always thought it was just a thing Electronic Arts did?!

Sort of both, apparently when EA first made games for the Megadrive they didnt have the license. So they installed a chip in that yellow bit which would by pass the Sega protection enabling EA unlicensed games to run on the console.

When EA finally did get the license, they continued to manufacture their yellow tagged cartridges as they always had done. Obviously without the chip by pass and also to make their games stand out.

Was it the megadrive that you could stack some cartridges on top of each other to add elements from other games? Like the sonic series?

If my memory is right - yes, it was Sonic 3 (Sonic and Knuckles) I think - you could plug an earlier game in the top... Sonic 2 I think :)

Released on October 14, 1994, Sonic and Knuckles was a revolutionary game because it was the first (and only game so far) containing Lock On Technology, which gave it the ability to hook up to other games. In this case, you could plug Sonic 2 or 3 into the top of the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge to play as Knuckles in those games. It boosted Sonic 3 even farther, Knuckles traveled over new ground in some zones and now there were 14 emeralds. Because of there being 14, you could now access Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails. You can also stick Sonic and Knuckles in the Genesis and play it on its own. The zones are about the same size as the ones in Sonic 3, and most of them have 2 acts. Some only have 1. Like Sonic 3, there is a boss in every act, except for Hidden Palace Zone.

Did nothing from what I remember, just an EA cartridge design.

It's explained above.

I always thought it was design as well, interesting that originally it served a purpose. I seem to remember Codemasters having slightly different carts too, but I'm sure that was down to design.

The Micro Machines games had extra joypad ports for 4 player fun!

And the carts were curved towards the top.

I think I have all the Micro machine games that were released on the Megadrive with cases and manuals. I have so many Megadrive games I'm thinking of building a Sega castle around my bed.
