Retro console and games thread

I'm not buying any more retro stuff till after Christmas but what should I get next for my arcade room? 80s Jukebox or Cocktail cabinet for Shmups? Currently I have Data Easts Robocop PCB back in the arcade cab.

Oh it's too difficult to decide. If you are just starting with the room then get the cocktail cab, if you have a couple of cabs already then go with the jukebox.

Both would be awesome!

Few bits my friend just gave me for my birthday :) (except the PS1 games )

I found out why it is possible to get a new Turbografx for just £65. It is the PAL version that was never really released in this country. It seems a batch was made but after poor sales in the US the UK launch was canceled. So it does have some interesting history. It's fully compatible with US games and Japanese games with a converter. But has a big downside in that it's 50Hz and with no PAL games ever released it means playing slowed down US games. It may be able to modded to 60Hz and it does have AV out which the US version didn't.

Could look good as part of a collection but might not be worth it for actually playing games on.

I will post up my collection in a few days.

You would not believe how much I have considering Isold £1250 worth a few months ago.

Long live boot sales!

Where are you all using to make your purchases?

Bootsales and maybe charity shops?

I just ask as reading some of this thread I think I will get into this as a new hobby. Auction sites seem a bit expensive I imagine because of postage.

My other query is Box snobbery!

Say you were buying a console, would you look for the original box not a later one?

As an example would you get Gamecube metroid prime pack boxed, or would you prefer to go for original solo gamecube box from release day.

I hope that makes sense!

thanks all

Wow trying to find a boxed Dreamcast that hasn't faded/gone yellow is nigh on impossible for less than £100.00. Looks like I'm going to have to up my budget! :(

It's still nowhere near the original finish though. I'm being über fussy I know but I want it as a collectors piece as mine is already going yellow.

I get mine from Ebay. Prices are not too bad and I'm not interested in PAL stuff, unless it has 60Hz. Never seen any import stuff in charity shops and can't be bothered to find and go to boot sales just to see if they have anything I want.

Boxes, I don't care. I'd would just get whatever is cheaper, but I'm buying to play, so not really bothered about boxes/condition. If it works fine, I'm happy :).

Hmmm I have a PAL Turbografx at home, I bought it off Ebay in 2006 for £31 with a couple of games.

At work at the min but I'll have to check mine when I get home and see what region the games are. It's still a nice machine though. :)

I managed to grab a couple of bargains (I think) on the bay over the last couple of days!

Majora's Mask - £19. Box is a bit battered, but acceptable condition. No manual
Super Smash Bros - £16. Mint condition

Just bought one today for the same price on eBay, didn't want to mess around with a machine costing £65. Only problem is that the payment is pending and needs to be "claimed" - not seen that before but hopefully it will sort itself out and I will have it next week. Did you get a chance to see what region the games are?

Great couple of games and quite a bargain too.

I've given up trying to find a new boxed PAL Dreamcast, one just went for £920 on eBay however there are quite a few new sealed NSTC consoles that are looking to be around £180 delivered which I'm prepared to pay. What would I need so my PAL games work with it? Will PAL-50 games work ok with a boot disc?

EDIT: the PAL Dreamcast is up to £4,100 now.
