Retro console and games thread

Well I had 1 hell of a surprise this morning.

Wasn't expecting it till mid-late next week!
So had to dash out and pick up a transformer, also got a multi-end PSU while I was out for another appliance. Got home and noticed that the PSU had the right end, so just used that instead :p. Thankfully I checked the polarity 1st, minus was on the inside :o

1st 2 things I noticed was that the console and the controller and surprisingly light, which was a little disappointing, since it looks like it weighs a ton. Unlike the cartridges....

You could bludgeon someone with 1 of these things!

Despite how light the controller feels, it works pretty damn well, buttons feel weird, but again work well.

Overall I'm very impressed, hopefully the dreams will stop now :p

Tried to sign up to the 2 major Neo Geo forums, I have a ton of questions, but neither websites have sent me authorisation emails, maybe because I only have an hotmail account, could use my work 1, but would rather not.

Yep, it's a JAP console.
I am hoping to start a collection, at a very leisurely pace, I am not paying £100+ for a game.
I'm hoping to pick up a MVS convertor, for cheaper games and to also pick up 1 of those 160-in-1 carts.
But I do love the AES carts, the boxes are fantastic, big and sturdy.[/QUOTE]

Very nice. I find myself watching one of these on eBay every so often but haven't gone for one yet. I've got one of those 160 on 1 carts for my MVS. They are mostly fine but on some games the music can cut out or not match up quite right.

My AES is tucked with the rest of videogames collection.
I've also got the Neo Geo X Handheld, but didn't take it out of its box.

I too love the carts. Nice and chunky :) I guess you really did get something for your money back then (and now!).

Hoping to go back to Japan next year and come back with a NeoGeo. Last year I wasn't so prepared for the amount of retro stuff I was tempted to bring back, so I only got a few games but no consoles.

just won and paid for this on fleabay

I needed a ps one for my collection, and I've been told the official sony screens for it are pretty rare/costly as there's plenty of third party screens.

Got it for what I think is a good price; shame its just that I'm so poor this month... nevermind... I'm sure the bank manager will thou.

Get that NEO GEO on a CRT not a LCD!

That looks awful.....

Not happening sadly, cheap to buy, but I have no space to put 1. Thinking about an upscaler but not sure what to get and how they work.

Got a ton of questions to ask on the Neo Geo forums, but none will let me on.

Tried signing on with my work email, but won't be able to access that till Tuesday.

definitely better on crt. all my consoles are on crt .

you can get cheaper big old crts for like 10-20 quid even the big old class sonys and panasonics every day. on ebay.

Love the Neo Geo. I would like one but I have enough to keep be occupied for the moment (well that and a lack of space).

Picked up a few more games after popping into Insane in Bridgwater:

I already had Halo 2 but I like how the Steel book looks. DC games are to add to the collection / play when I get some free time. Shenmue (1 & 2) will be getting all of my DC attention now I have the VGA box. All were £3 each IIRC

Also picked up this in the Street store:

Ended up getting it for £30 as I had some money off vouchers. Its complete and in decent condition. Never played a Zelda game properly before butit was fun for the 20 minutes or so I played. I REALLY need a better putput method than Composite on my N64 as the game was very blurry and started giving me a headache. My TV doesn't help but I don't have room for another one at the moment - this may change in the future.

Also picked up a brand new unopened Xbox 360 E Bundle (Halo 4 one) while I was there. I know it isn't Retro (hence no pictures), but I am using it to play my Xbox games so there is a retro purpose :p:D

Nice 1, never really got to play Majora's Mask, my N64 died around when I bought it. Would still like to try playing it again.

Bought myself an upscaler, on recommendation I've ordered myself a XRGB mini from Japan.

Also think I'm gonna switch to a Universe bios, but would changing the bios hurt the resale value at all? Because at the rate my bank account is draining, this thing is gonna be my retirement fund.

New Game.

Forgot how tough these old skool platformers were, still, I've managed to beat level 1 so far :p.

Looked into a MVS convertor and they seem stupidly priced and unreliable, so thinking of getting a MVS board and just wiring it up, finding it hard to get info on the best boards to use etc.

Philips CD-I arrived today, bit of beast, like an extra heavy VCR. Plays games fine but the rubber belt for the CD drive door has perished but the seller has agreed to send me a replacement. Played a bit of The 7th Guest, picture quality is very good but the gameplay is a bit slower than the PC version. Good sound too. Now I just have to source those terrible Zelda games for it.

Also been watching a couple of other consoles and wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. The Apple Pippin, can get them new boxed but doesn't seem to much software around for them. And the FM Towns Marty, looks pretty interesting, it got quite a few of the LucasArts games and was way ahead of its time when released.

No cdi collection is complete without the toobin game....was awesome!

Wasn't there a game called kether too that apparently was impossible to complete lol

Have a MASSIVE treat in the post to me in the form of a copy of Gradius V for the PS2. CEX are selling it online for 12 quid!!! Seems to fetch a lot more than that in the bay etc

Possibly one of the shining moments if gaming perfection on the console.

Kind of excited if you couldn't tell :)

I'll check them out, thanks. It came with a couple of games including the Apprentice which is supposed to be quite good and I've got a sealed copy of Dragons Lair I might have to break open.
