Retro console and games thread

More Dreamcast goodness today: Bomberman Online, I picked this up from the US eBay still factory sealed, being a gamer I had to tear it open and play it! (the re-seal bag is one added to keep it minty fresh). This is a fantastic game and strangely only saw a release in North America in 2001, even Japan never for this one despite it being developed in Japan by Hudson. The cell-shaded graphics are awesome, loads of modes, great single player campaign and of course online multiplayer if it was still the year 2001. Sega were light-years ahead with the Dreamcast, if only it had a DVD it would have given the PS2 a run for its money.

Played via VGA box to SLG 3000 (scanline generator) on my 40" Sony LCD, looks fantastic!

I love my Dreamcast still play this much more than most my other consoles. I would love to own that game too, looks awesome. Can you point me in the right direct for one of these VGA boxes? What's this SLG3000? I take it that it creates the retro feel? Does it work with other consoles?

VGA boxes are commonly found on eBay but also through fan forums. The Dreamcast outputs a native 480p VGA signal, you can buy a direct DC-VGA cable if you prefer not to have box. About 90% of games support VGA and look significantly better this way, particularly if you are playing on a modern LCD TV. You can also buy a VGA to HDMI converter if your new TV lacks the VGA port, something the most newer sets lack. There are plenty of reviews on youtube so have a look. Cabou's VGA cables are hand made, lack the box so they save space and are really good but a little expensive. I would like one of these in the future.

The SLG3000 adds scanlines to the image which provides a CRT look and when you sit back from the TV it hides the jaggy edges on the image, it looks sharper and really cleans 2D fighters up very very well. The Hanzo is a handmade VGA box with scanline function built in and reviewed here:

SLG 3000 is made by Arcade Forge and can be used with other consoles if you use a scaler and sync strike also from these chaps.

I plan on getting a scaler to use the SLG with my SNES in the future, it much cheaper than say an XRGB mini (awesome for retro console but £250!)

Hi guys, i been a bit quiet in this thread so I though i would post my latest exploits in retro gaming! :D

I finally completed my NES RGB (well Famicom RGB to be precise!) Install was a ball ache but finally got the board in and the pallet switch wired in and the AV Connector points soldered in.

I must tell you, when i first switched the machine on i was genuinely gob-smacked by the picture quality. It was pixel perfect. I am really enjoying playing through all my old NES games now in RGB. Best mod i have ever done on any machine!

WOW amazing job there, amazing. The picture looks so much better than the crappy composite output. I recently sold my childhood NES and games because I can't get into the 50Hz PAL versions again and the image quality was just YUK!

I would still like to have one though, that NES/Famicom mini looks nice and with that RGB mod I wouldn't say no have getting one at some point again. I read that fitting the RGB is a real big job, you must have surgeons hands to solder all the necessary points!

Thanks mate. I was the same, I couldn't stand the 50hz anymore after getting my Twin Fami and playing games in 60hz on that.

The New Famicom is the best model to do it on imho. It comes with the Multi AV out so you can use the same SCART lead as the SNES one, which is what i do. It was very time consuming to do. I would like to do the mod to the Twin Fami but i'm holding off for now as dong this one was a PITA! :D

Some new games, one of which I did not expect to get so quickly with the price limits I put on my retro games...... Havn't stopped playing it all night mad memories :D
