Retro console and games thread

So thanks to my internet being down for most of yesterday (and the power being out until early evening to boot) I thought it would be nice to crack out the Dreamcast for some Retro goodness. Ended up spending about 4 hours playing on it as I completely lost track of the time! :o:D

I also thought I would take a couple up to date shots of my setup as it has changed quite noticeably since I last posted some pics.

My setup:

Due to a lack of space I have a "one size fits all" for my pre PS1 era retro goodness:

(all the spare leads, cables, controller and accessories are in the cupboard below).

Getting the DC setup:

Had to choose the right game for my mood:

One final pic, says it all really.... :p

(Barring the hair this is the most "normal" I could make her look. The other outfits were..... er...... well..... just no).

Recently grabbed a DC too, and this game but have yet to play it! How does it play offline?

It plays fine although I imagine it would have been better with online co-op back in the day. Combat is action orientated (instead of turn based) and there seems to be a variety of builds you can do. The manual is vital (well if you internet is down at least) as it does a poor job of explaining what things means in game (I had no idea whether red numbers meant and item was better vs blue numbers).

Got my ass handed to me by the first boss. :D

Thanks.

Don't know what to do with it now.

After spending some time looking at Xbox 360 exclusives, I'm struggling to see why it was so successful.

Take away Halo, Gears of War, Forza and Fable and there's not much left. To be honest I fail to see the appeal of any of them.

Having recently played an finished Halo 1 and 5, I can only assume that it has been the multiplayer that has sustained it over the years. Because the single player campaigns are as dull as dishwater.

I played GoW 1 on PC, when it first came out, and recently the remake on XboxOne as well as dipping into Gow 2 on occasions. Again the SP campaigns are all by the numbers and all you ever seem to do is shoot stuff and walk to the next battle.

I played Forza 6 on Xbox one with the top of the range wheel, pedal and shifter Fanatec set up and there's something seriously wrong with the physics model. As a seasoned sim racer I found the game very frustrating, after a weekend of trying I gave up and sold it on.

The only thing I can see it worth hanging onto for is all the Shmups that it seemed to get, especially from Japan. Which is ironic when you consider that the PlayStation 3 had almost none.

I've ordered Akai Katana and Deathsmiles today and I might invest in an arcade stick if they're any good. But I fear that's about all the Xbox 360 with get used for.

Where I do agree with the 360 Library comment,

Forza 4 and Horizon 1 are good enough to make me want one to tbh. Agree that 6 is far inferior to 4 all day long

I would include the PGR series in the list as well as they are brilliant

P.S Fair play on PSO.....lost A LOT of my life to that game on slow internet back in the day. Musical score on that game was and still is phenomenal!

Also ordered PGR 3 and 4.

I quite like the demo of Forza Horizon 2 on the XboxOne, so might get it when the price drops some more.

My friend picked me up Forza Horizon 2 on the rain forest for £13 a few weeks back :)....worth having a poke about especially if you know a man with Prime

Nice Dreamcast posts there, I'm hopping to get mine out again soon after being packed away for the past 12 months. The crazy thing is I've been picking up the odd game here and there for it throughout the year.......I really need to play them.

I have one of those Toro VGA boxes on the way so once it arrives I'm sure to get some hours in on the old DC!

You have the same Sony panel as me....I don't have a stand though lol. Brilliant screen isn't it!

Lovely screen. It was only moved upstairs when we upgraded to a 4K Sony TV in the lounge. It has all the inputs I need for both modern & retro goodness.

Despite Europe not getting a lot of decent games the DC is still and absolute gem of a console

I adore the DC. I think the combination of home versions of what I grew up with in the arcades (Sega Rally, House of the Dead, etc) and genuinely fun to play games (Powerstone, DoA2, Shenmue, MSR, JSR, Fur Fighters etc) are what made it a stand out for me. At the time of its release it was jaw dropping what it could achieve compared to the PS1/Saturn/N64.

Completely agree

I have an import disk for mine meaning I can get hold of all of the jap only goodness and versions which are better on ntsc than pal (snk vs capcom with vga support / sega rally with fun screen 60hz and the escort cossie)
