Retro console and games thread

Master System was my first console as an adult around 1988/89. As a kids I had a Radofin 1292 and Texas Instruments TI994A computer when I was about 14/15.

Probably played RType, Space Harrier and Ultima IV more than anything else. Didn't play Alex Kidd as mine had Hang On built in. Then in late 1990 I got a Japanese Mega Drive.

Nice. How would you say the master system holds up? I see more master system 2 for sale rather than the original. I think the original looks much nicer

Don't buy a Master System II, only supports RF OUT. Original has RGB SCART, Megadrive cables and PSU are also the same. MD controllers also work on MS.

Personally I'd buy the Master System converter for the Mega Drive, rather than a complete system. Particularly if you have a region free MD, as that will allow you to play MS games at 60hz.

All MS games are region free.

Not sure if the original Master System converter fits the MD2. I'd check first because the Master System converter mark II is very expensive compared to the original one.

Might be worth seeing if there are any modern third party converters. Because all they are is a cartridge slot adapter. The actual MS CPU is on the MD motherboard as a co processor is some description. So all the adapters to is convert the MD slot into an MS slot.

I have been changing my mind constantly, but I have decided to sell my Megadrive and SNES. Had them since I was a kid but I think they would be better off with someone who will use them. With the exception of Zelda for the SNES, I have the following (which I posted in this tread a couple of years ago):

Are there a lot of people in the MM who collect retro stuff or would it be better to eBay them?

G.

I would take a look if you posted some of that stuff in the MM, sure others would (especially the MD stuff).

^^

That's a Mega Drive Mark III

there's a mega drive MK3 ? i thought they only did 2 ?
(looks on Google)

Just got my NES out, as i finally got a NES to Scart lead, and blimey these are unreliable
Got a brand new 72pin connector in along with cleaning all my games, still having problems

whats a good alternative that uses the original carts? im thinking Retron 3 ?

I think it was release by AT Games, officially licenced by Sega and included a bunch of games. I think it plays original cartridges too. Has very poor sound quality, no stereo or RGB output.

Retron 3 is an emulator machine, it copies the ROM and plays it via emulation.

Analogue NT mini is considered the blue ribbon alternative to an original system.

Re opened my sale thread in the MM if anyone is interested.

thanks Barmy

been looking at Retron 5 (£120 ish) 720p and plays more systems, so good for me, just want to be able to use my carts so not bothered if emulation or not

After a few new additions my PS2 collection now fills one rather small shelf :D Really need to start playing through them before grabbing more.

Out of these I've only played God of war, GTA and MGS. All the others were picked up as ones I've missed or from 'hidden gem' lists!

Is it wrong that I wish platinum range wasn't a thing!

Yeah using Full HD screen

I've heard of the Rasp but i don't know anything about them

£30 system capable of emulation up to around PS1 standard via RetroPi software.

Worth looking into if you are going down the Retron 3 or 5 route, since both will be basically emulation with HDMI out.

Retron does allow you to use original controllers and make copies of any game data stored on your original cartridges. I think it may also allow save states as well.

A Pi is more work on your part but a lot cheaper.

For me the only time to use original hardware is if you're connecting systems to a CRT TV.

There are so many options nowadays to play retro games that as long as you're enjoying them then any method that works for you is all that matters.
