Rift S DisplayPort issue

Interesting. I was wondering about the 2070S myself - given I can sell my 1080Ti it should be too huge a cost to change. When you say it makes more of a difference for VR, why is that?

You reinstalled the latest graphic drivers are doing the firmware update?

Wait a sec - I didn't do this. You're saying to re-install nVidia drivers after the firmware update? Even though they're already the latest drivers?

I'm pretty convinced on the 2070S. The difference in the benchmark scores from that to the various 2080 offerings just don't seem to justify the extra outlay.

Re-installed, didn't work. :)

I do have nVidia support now looking into it (pleasantly surprised that they didn't wash their hands of it in the same way as Oculus support now have), but I'm pretty resigned to replacing my GPU.

Your continued help over 7 pages has been immensely appreciated! :)

nVidia have suggested a few things. None worked yet, but they're still trying! Latest is they've asked for a copy of MSINFO file. See if they can find anything in there.

At the same time, I read through Oculus supports last email absolving themselves of responsibility because I've proved it is a GPU issue. And decided that's a bit wrong. So I have emailed them back pointing out that since it was working fine and had a perfectly stable DP connection until it updated the firmware, that isn't quite true. It isn't a case of a faulty GPU, it's a case of a compatibility issue, so that remains as much their fault as nVidias.

Doubt that'll achieve anything, but can't hurt to try while I'm waiting for the no-doubt astonishingly cheap black Friday deals. :D

Don't you think it working before the firmware update points to an issue with the firmware rather than the card?
Or maybe saying an issue with one or the other isn't quite right - an incompatibility between the two.

nVidia's second line support got back to me today. But the only suggestion they had which I haven't already tried is installing the card in another computer. I don't have another myself, and I don't think I can do that with a friend. Too much of an imposition. Their suggestion seems to be Palit might have used a differnet spec of displayport than other manufacturers. I know Sideways said he has the same card - but was it the exact same card? Palit have at least 3 models of 1080Ti.

Here's their full reply:
Thank you for contacting Nvidia Customer Care. My name is Josh and I will be assisting with your case. We do not have any known issues with using the Rift S and the 1080ti. In our testing it is working just fine. We do not have a Pallet card. This could only matter if the ports they used for the card have issues or are not the same as other cards. It is also possible there is a software conflict. I think what you will need to do here is some more troubleshooting.

If possible to eliminate software conflict. Do a fresh windows install latest updates and just the basics for VR.

To see if the issue follows the card, if possible install the pallet 1080ti in another system and try the rift S. If it happens here then it has to be specific to the card.

You could also contact Pallet directly and see if they know about any possible issues with the ports they have installed on the card.

So back to a plan of buying a 2070 Super. Selling this card at a slightly knocked down price to someone who definitely doesn't want to use it with a Rift S (it's been absolutely faultless apart from this!)

Indeed. In the meantime, since I'm waiting anyway, I'm contacting the PC builder and Palit themselves just on the off chance they're willing to do something. For the builder, it's out of the parts warranty period, but they've said they will also contact Palit for me if I send the card S/N, since the card itself might still be covered by Palit.

I reckon there's slim chance they'll do anything, but can't hurt to try.

Bit belated, but after a little chase got responses from both the builder and from Palit.

The builder confirmed the card is out of warranty (I have a sneaking suspicion that this happened while I was in conversation with them, since it ticked over 2 years since I bought it) so nothing more they can do.

Palit suggested all the things I'd already done, plus updating the GPU BIOS. So I did that... and it made no difference.
They said the DP spec on my card is identical to the 1050Ti DP spec (although I think they're presuming the 1050TI I used was also a Palit which isn't the case. But we already know other Palit cards work fine.)

I'm not expecting any further progress to be honest. It's not a faulty card, except possibly by an incredibly narrow definition, so even if it were still under warranty I don't think they'd be doing anything.

I have my eye on a 2070S which has already been reduced, but waiting a little longer to see what other cards join it.

You're dead right that was my point of hesitancy! :)

But as it turned out that Palit had answered me, the email just hadn't come through (they re-forwarded the email so I have proof of that) I'm not as concerned about their customer service. And I saw a post saying that OC will deal with all RMA themselves anyway.

Well, the 2070S is installed.

Oculus nearly gave me palpitations by going through the same process of working, then requiring a firmware update...

But this time it continued working after said update. Phew!

I've still not got around to playing anything on it though, because now I've got to build my chair! :D

That's definitely a more recent post than my problem. Some of the steps look familiar - but at least one or two of them I never did, so you may be lucky!

Good luck!
