Ring Video Doorbell

You don't need a subscription for the products to perform their base functions.

Base functions... Nest cameras are practically useless without a subscription. If you only want to use their base functions there are much cheaper products.

nest cameras are in the nest eco system. google google. no you do not have access to 3rd party local storage hence why they want you to sign up to their subscription service. personally your better of buying a cheap nas, some poe switches and camera or even a cheap camera to record locally with no monthly fee

Have many here got the Ring Doorbell 2 and if so how are you getting on with it?

I've been looking for a while now at buying one and have seen they're currently in argos for £169 with chime

their is a HD version now for £239 that is why the Ring 2 is now slightly cheaper.

why spend £240 on a doorbell when you can simply add a CCTV camera for half that? stick the CCTV camera on your front door and it does the same job if not better.

No you won't be able to talk to whoever is at your door but I don't see the point in that personally as it's pretty obvious you aren't home if you are talking to them through the doorbell, it's been widely advertised as such too. I already notify amazon, DPD, etc where to put my parcels using their delivery services.

The Ring doorbell 2 is the same resolution as the Pro - 1080p. I think you've made it clear a here you 'don't see the point' in a 'crappy gimmicky' Ring doorbell (or have a clue about owning one) so I think it's fair to say we get it now and you can move on to another thread.

Enjoy your camera. :)

For me that's probably 60% of the reason I have one. I've talked a couple of delivery guys into leaving something they aren't really supposed to (as I know they aren't expensive items) and would have taken them away otherwise.

I think you've made it clear a here you 'don't see the point'

It seems to bother him others find use in them...

One of those people you get of forums that feels the need to post in every thread, despite not having a clue or any experience on the subject.

I've spoken to people at my doorbell even while I've been working abroad, not only when they ring the doorbell but once the motion detection went off and I found out my other half had arranged for someone to install a trampoline in the garden for the kids while I was away (I didn't want one! :D).

I know someone who just bought the £240 one. So I will be getting a review off them in a few weeks time.

I may buy it if it actually works decent but most people say all the bugs need ironed out. So probably better buying one in a few years. Never buy first gen tech.

It's why I don't own vr ATM and also think it's still gimmicky. I'll wait for all the bugs to be ironed out before I buy

That's quite a turn around? 'No point', to 'I might get one'!

What bugs are you talking about? They did have when I first got mine, but mine were fixed in a patch over a year ago.

the v2 actually is the newest one out and is 1080p. Main difference seems to be the option of battery powered vs the hardwire only pro

Don't really get the negativity about a product you don't even seem to understand?

I'd imagine majority of people buy things like the ring for the exact reason you see as pointless, I know that's why I'm looking at them

I work from home so being able to see on the app who's at the door is a big perk to avoid being too disturbed, also being able to talk while not in is a very useful thing to me

I think as a doorbell it's a gimmick. The security aspect intrigues me. It's basically a real time alarm system. Where if it detects someone it snaps a photo and sends to your phone.

The version with security light looks good also.

Where this helps is the real time alerts. Whereas CCTV just records away without alerting you.

All the retailers that sell them online have mixed reviews and say they don't work that great

Mine works perfectly, and has been very useful for deliveries ('I can't come to the door right now, please pop it in the safe place on the left' when the reason I can't come to the door is I'm 200 miles away...)

I've just got a Fire tablet from Amazon to do a product review. With Alexa, it lets you say, "Alexa, show Front Door Camera." It automatically shows the live feed, which is impressive. I'm wondering- is there some way to easily program it to show the live feed immediately movement is detected? IFTTT sadly doesn't allow you to do it, but is there a simple alternative?

I disagree. You're saying the doorbell aspect is just a trick to attract attention to the product. I would say, no, it actually is the product and works great. I don't even see how that's debatable to be honest.

Well google (aka nest) are releasing their own version next year. I already have a Nest thermostat so it looks like waiting for the market to mature will likely pay off.

I was already thinking about CCTV and nest cameras albeit expensive and high running costs. Seems to have the easiest to install and run costs. Everything is also saved to the cloud so it's harder to be compromised. The robbers would have to tamper with the box for the whole street or the wiring outside that my cameras would pick up anyway.

I'm not set on buying yet but the security aspect of the nest hello doorbell stands out as being very good. You can even set it up so that if someone does approach your door lights automatically come on inside your home, etc.

I'm looking at getting one of these, probably the pro model (smaller footprint) if I can in a black Friday deal.

What I am not good with though is installing things like this and would want a professional install, from google I can only find Maplins that do it.

Has anyone gone for the professional install or just done it themselves?

No, it's expected that the Ring Pro is hardwired into your consumer unit but you could use a 24VAC transformer with a normal 3 pin plug such as Dantech DA652

I went for the Dantech and it's been a bit of a headache tbh. I installed the Pro Power Cable (In-line fuse, 1.5amps) that came with the ring, and have no doorbell, so I'm going from a 3-pin socket to the Dantech adaptor, and running along doorbell wire to the front door. The in-line fuse seems to blow daily at the moment, even though the app is reporting correct voltage. Doorbell is set to none in the app, as advised by Ring but it hasn't helped. The most I've managed to use the device is 24hours before the fuse blew again.

After hours of speaking to Ring, they advised I should try the transformer that came with it, guess I'll have to get a sparky in to do the business at the consumer unit.. Anyone else had the same issue with the Dantech?

I got the ring2, it is a great camera two things I don’t like though,

Battery isn’t that great and other friends find this too

I’ve got the chime so the ringtones are great especially Halloween and Xmas ones but ideally I would want this on the doorbell itself so guests can hear it. Pointless on the chime
