February 2004: Buy Mondeo Ghia X
March 2004: Go to Ford Main dealer. Hello, I have just bought a Mondeo. I beleive its due a cambelt and tensioner change. Can you do this for me?

'Certainly sir, though this is the revised blacktop Zetec engine so you only need a belt change'
March 2004: Belt changed

November 2009: Tensioner fails

Moral of story: Do not trust a dealer, do your own research.

The belt was changed, but the point is the tensioner wasnt. So it was 5 years + whatever age it was when Fox bought it. So it might well have been due when the belt was done.

Worst case scenario - no reply / sympathy.

Best case scenario - they offer you something.

This is Ford, you're lucky to get something fixed in warranty.

If it was verbal with nothing in writing then it'll be about as useful as writing to the Queen.

I agree that any result is extremely unlikely, but all you can lose is the time it takes you to write a well-worded letter and the cost of a stamp.

Nothing in the service schedule for the 146 about changing the water pump, variator, or either tensioner, but I did all 4 with the belt.

10 years 100k. I asked about the tensioner and was told it didn't need doing on the revised engine but was essential on the silvertop engine. It had the revised engine. Thinking that they were a) Ford and b) Never going to turn down more work unless there was a good reason I trusted them. Never mind.

Thinking Mk3 time.

Are there DMF issues with the rubbishy TDDi engine?
