RIP Stephen Gately

I find it disturbing that the 'powers that be' have felt the need to sanitise this thread without reference to the original posts. I agree that posts which are downright rude or disrespectful to the dead probably have no place in an 'RIP' thread but some of the puns on offer were neither rude nor disrespectful. In fact, my own 'It's only words' retort to Dark_Angel's post was meant as a respectful reference to one of Boyzone's more well known records and an attempt to difuse some of the bickering that was building up.

In our nation's society we have a long and highly regarded history of gallows humour and laughing in the face of adversity. The ability to see the lighter side of a tradgedy is something that has seen us, as a nation, ride out Nazi bombing, domestic terrorism, financial meltdown and unfit government. Without it we would risk being reduced to an overly sentimental sobfest of a nation or a whining, "life's so hard being me", victim culture

Brucie was right, we should have a bit more of a sense of humour ove these things and stop taking offence on other people's behalf.

Amen! Some people around here seriously need to lighten up a bit and get a sense of humour!

Right On Brothers !!!

Perhaps it would be better just to ban RIP threads or give them their own forum.

Many of the posts removed weren't jokes, they were just gay bashing/relishing in his death or trolling. I like a laugh, but I don't see any need to deliberately offend people for no reason other than homophobia, or because someone needs to raise their own self esteem by lowering someone elses.

All that's needed is for people to have just a modicum of respect for others and avoid making posts with the sole intention of offending people.

Well I would like to say that I went to work/sleep so didn't see the other comments only my own.
Anyway I Laugh in the face of adversity it's just the way I am & there is not a single ounce of homophobia about me.
My Humour is Never personal & my only intention is to have a Laugh.
Anybody that gets offended by What some old **** writes on tinterweb (as in ME !!!) has some serious personal issues they need to address.
I will not change my way of dealing with the adversity's of life to please some overly sensitive "Individuals" for want of a better word.

Stephen Gately died of natural causes. He had a pulmonary oedema, which is a build up of fluid on the lungs. No drugs no drink just a tragic incident. Maybe all the speculation can stop now?

Officials dismissed speculation that Gately choked on his own vomit, and said drugs and alcohol were not involved in his death.

Its funny how quiet people have gone suddenly now its been proven it was natural causes....maybe he can now rest in peace.

The Boyzone singer Stephen Gately died of natural causes, a post-mortem examination in Spain has established. An official said he suffered pulmonary oedema, which is an accumulation of fluid on the lungs.

...

The court official said the pulmonary oedema had been "acute". She added that once the witness statements and tests are confirmed then the "case will be closed".

However, she could not say whether Gately had been taking any drugs or alcohol beforehand but either way, they were not the cause of death. Toxicology results are due later. A sample of fluid taken during the post-mortem exam will also be sent to a forensic laboratory in Barcelona for further tests to confirm the result.

She declined to say whether Gately had vomited before his death.

...

"We are not saying he was not drinking but eight hours is not something we accept" [Family lawyer Gerald Kean] said.

I would have thought that it was "unusual" for a fit 33-year old to die of pulmonary oedema

now, now weren't you the one saying wait till the results came

They also said

Its the same thing my Grandad died of, and he had to have toxicology tests done as a matter of routine, not because they thought it was linked to his death. Its just so they can rule everything else out and confirm this is what killed him. It would have been something building up over a while, that he wouldnt have been aware of, and that would have just slowly killed him, as it did my Grandad. (although obviously my Grandad was a lot older than Stephen Gately) His lungs would have filled with fluid slowly, and he technically would have "drowned" due to the oedema.

Of course it is but I know 2 parents who have lost children to it.

My mates 21 year old son had just got in from work and said he was going to have a bath.
He heard a bang upstairs and his son was lying dead on the floor.
The autopsy revealed nothing.

Same for another work mate Margaret who had a 19 year old daughter who suddenly died.
She had taken her a cup of tea, walked downstairs and caught the postie who gave her a letter.
She took the letter straight back upstairs to her daughter who was now dead.
Once again there were no suspicious circumstances.

It does happen.

No just that people were claiming he had done things its been confirmed he now hasn't, and he wasn't here to defend himself.

I deal in probability, a celebrity out in Mallorcas gay scene (which has a much higher drug usage than hetero) dies after he comes home from a night out.

I take back the hamsters up the bum and bondage asphyxiation. Although, looking at the deaths of many entertainment celebs over the years, it's difficult to think he choked on cookies and milk, when his highly paid media lawyer even admits he was drinking.

Yes, I could be completely wrong and this MIGHT just be one of the rare natural causes cases, although my sis works as a emergency doc and even she said it was unusual.

Go and read the evidence, he had a pulmonary oedema, which yes is very rare in someone of his age, but not unheard of, as has been mentioned by dmpoole already. His lungs filled up with pulmonary fluid, and that is the only thing that killed him.
