RIP Stephen Gately

no-one knows him or gives toss about him here, but they all translate his death onto their own loved ones and believe any attack on him is an attack on their own family.

Welcome to slick media promotion and psychological manipulation.

It doesn't really matter what he died of. It seems that nothing he was doing was that outrageous or extraordinary, certainly nothing that you expect to die of unless there's some underlying genetic susceptibility.

The fuss is sheerly because he's famous, which is understandable but bizarre at the same time. I suppose it comes down to the number of fans of boyzone that will read the news. News sites like any commercial venture, need to consider their audience / customers.

Pulmonary oedema can occur due to a forceful knock to the chest can't it?
I believe that cocaine use can lead to acute chest pains?

Go and read the evidence ...
So far as I am aware, the evidence is not in the public domain; are you aware of somewhere that we can do as you suggest?

... he had a pulmonary oedema, which yes is very rare in someone of his age, but not unheard of, as has been mentioned by dmpoole already. His lungs filled up with pulmonary fluid, and that is the only thing that killed him.
I think that the question that people are asking is whether any part of his lifestyle may have led to the sudden, unexpected build-up of pulmonary fluid in someone of his age.

It is my understanding that it will be several weeks before toxicology tests will show whether alcohol or drugs were in his bloodstream when he died and if drugs, what they were. I also believe that a police source has now confirmed that Gately had been sick where his body was found.

It is sad when any young person dies; it is even sadder where they have intentionally or inadvertently been the cause of their death. However, in the latter case, there is perhaps some merit in using their sad demise as an example to others not to adopt their particular lifestyle.

Is pulmonary oedema the medical term for 'drowning'? Lungs full of fluid. Is that not drowning?

It is yes, its what killed my Grandad, in his case his body was unable to clear fluid out of his lungs and it basically slowly killed him. He technically drowned. My grandads heart was basically not able to pump fluid out of his lungs.

your heart doesnt pump stuff out of the lungs

your lungs are just unable to expel the fluid..I'm sure I read that technically if you get you lungs full of water, you can actually get some oxygen from the water, but after that you cannot get rid of the de-oxygenated water so you actually suffocate through lack of oxygen, not because your lungs are full of water

Pulmonary edema (American English), or oedema (British English, Greek οίδημα), is fluid accumulation in the lungs.[1] It leads to impaired gas exchange and may cause respiratory failure. It is due to either failure of the heart to remove fluid from the lung circulation ("cardiogenic pulmonary edema") or a direct injury to the lung parenchyma ("noncardiogenic pulmonary edema").[2] Treatment depends on the cause, but focuses on maximizing respiratory function and removing the cause.

fluid in the lungs can dilute the blood and will put strain on the heart and cause a lack of oxygen to the brain and other organs iirc

Not being odd or anything, but I haven't heard a single Stephen gately joke yet. Usually the jokes appear always at the same time at the reports of the death.
Jacko has plenty within hours of his demise, perhaps Gately was just either loved by folks, or they don't care towards him at all.

Should also add - RIP Steven - sure he was a nice guy obv celeb death jokes do seem to be quite common these days but tbh.. life would be even more depressing if you couldn't laugh at almost any situation
