Well, it most definitely had a good run. Epic Games halted the development for Unreal Tournament. The latest iteration will be free and available in online game stores, but the developer will not update the game. Unreal Tournament is still in the prealfa phase.

The news comes from Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, who mentions this to Variety. The developer would be planning to sell some of his older titles via GOG.com.

“‘Unreal Tournament’ remains available in the store but isn’t actively developed,” he told Variety. “We’ve recently worked with GOG on making classic Epic Games titles available and we’re planning to bring more of them to the store in their original glory.”

“Unreal Tournament” is the ninth installment in a first-person shooter franchise created by Epic Games and Digital Extremes in 1999. This latest installment was announced in 2014 as a sort of opensource development version of the game. But as “Fortnite’s” popularity increased with the release of its free Battle Royale mode, resources were pulled from other parts of the studio to focus on “Fortnite.”

While the game isn’t officially dead, the “Unreal Tournament” hasn’t received an official update since the summer of 2017.

It makes me wonder what Quake's future is once they keep overhauling things and the numbers keep dropping. Now trying to go down the Fortnite Battle Pass route.

That's sad news.
The series had to end some time and the current hope of the open source development was great. It's just such a shame it's been sidelined for a game I detest.

The original UT and UT2K4 are some of my best gaming memories.

Sad to hear it's still their stance on the matter but also nothing new: various comments on Epic forums and elsewhere have said the same since July 2017. On the plus side, they haven't simply canned it as they did with Paragon. UT doesn't need too much infrastructure to run and I imagine there will still be games to be found on servers for some time yet. There's always a chance that development resumes properly one day - or at least the untextured maps get finished.

This is a real shame. I had a good bit of fun with it a couple of years ago, there's something astoundingly satisfying about "proper" games like these that the latest style just can't seem to replicate. It pains me to see the current state of Quake, which is a really fantastic game and deserves much more attention than it gets.

I hope that when Fortnite inevitably peters out, that Epic don't forget their roots, and that their newly found riches (and steam rivalling platform) can maybe feed the rebirth of something close to the purity of the games from a genre that seems to be becoming forgotten.

Somehow I doubt Fortnite will die out. Everyone copies the Battle Royale concept and that's it for multiplayer.

It will decrease in popularity eventually, all things do. Massive trends tend to fizzle out as quickly as they blow up.

I uninstalled when they forced everyone to use a permanent in-game name. It never really got off the ground anyway, sadly.

That's not because it was bad, for pre-alpha it was superb. But no one wants an uber fast complicated FPS these days.

the game has changed its not profitable.its that simple.why waste time on something thats not generating money. look at what they doing. they trying to create a steam take on market platform.no point it putting money into a lost niche cause. as good as it was literally no one plays it now days.thats why it dont work.

Yeah there isn't the audience for the hardcore pure FPS arena any more.

I have to say I don't see the appeal in PUBG and Fortnite at all personally but I rarely play Quake/UT these days.
