** RJKONEILL'S NVIDIA SHIELD TABLET REVIEW **

Can you play PC games on that tablet?

The base shield is £100+ cheaper and modular.

Tablet comparisons: the shield is pretty much in the same price point as gen2 nexus 7 tablets which it blows away in terms of spec and performance.

Then Nexus is pointless considering due to the lack of gaming support.

Was not comparing just commenting on the chap aboves post.

I'm really liking the shield I think the idea is fantastic It just needs to be a bit cheaper I feel.

Seems like the perfect solution to a problem that never existed!

Can you stream your steam library from any internet connection or does it have to be your home network?

Apart from the "sheild" features it's just another android tablet is it not?

Is the reviewer aware the software to game stream runs on almost any tablet? The unique selling point is not that unique.

that's kind of my point?

I don't see how a tablet which is the same price as a sold at cost app purchase platform like the nexus is overpriced?

£200ish for the base model tablet is alarmingly affordable given the performance on offer. Even for a person looking for 'just a tablet' and totally disregarding any gaming or game streaming capability, the Shield represents incredible value for money.

comparing shield to the competition:
Nexus 7 2nd Gen - Better performance and spec by a long mark
Lenovo A10 - Better OS and performance
Kindle Fire HDX - Better OS and performance
Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 - Better OS and performance

nothing at a remotely similar price point comes anywhere close in terms of performance so I am struggling to understand why it needs to be cheaper?

If it was £50+ more expensive than the similar price point devices I listed above then I could see your argument for 'Nvidia tax' but it is the exact same price and performs better.

Posted this on the laptop/tablet forum but this one seems more active:

Really like the look of this!

One thing that I read was that if you wanted to stream in 1080p 60fps from your PC to tablet whilst it's in console mode connected to the TV, you need to have an ethernet adaptor connected to the tablet. If you're connected via Wifi rather than ethernet, apparently it's limited to 720p and 30 fps.

Is that true? If so, do you think you guys will stock one?

The other thing that makes it a tricky would be you also need a cable that would connect the ethernet adaptor and power cable to the shield's micro usb socket, so you can charge / power the tablet whilst you're streaming to a TV.

If I recall, officially it's local wifi only but a couple of guys in the US have managed to get it working over an internet connection?

If you know how to network I imagine you could create a virtual Lan over the Internet would be a lot of tinkering I imagine.

Yes, Fully aware. I have been using splashtop on my nexus for some time. I have also tried out Kainy as well.

Whilst both of these are ok, Gamestream is a lot more responsive, especially from a controller and feels much less prone to network lag.

Overall, Gamestream is a far more polished and integrated solution than the current android app alternatives.

You have unread Facebook messages.

Looks good though! I can't get my head around whether I would get value for money from it but I'm sure for some it's a must-have gadget

I don't mean alternative remote software. The same Gamestream remote software that Shield has works on most other tablets. Its even the same software to install on the PC, the same setups and same PC requirements of GeForce GPU only. Its not limited to Shield and works just as well as shield.
"the Shield PC Game Streaming capability is unique, unrivaled and I can see it being extremely difficult to beat any time soon. "
I don't see how its unique or unrivaled when its the same protocols used, same PC software and works on other tablets.

This next point I don't mean as a negative. But I feel it’s worth mentioning over wireless game stream is 720p only. 1060p is Ethernet only as there has been some confusion over this. Some people think they can wirelessly stream at 1080p to the native TV resolution of 1080p but that doesn't work.

Ah, now, this might work for me when away from home with my Gigabyte P35k ......stream to tablet to carry on gaming - guessing the GTX765M is up to this?

the game stream at 720p is obvious. you can tell from my youtube uploads being at 720p that this is the case. But this really doesn't cause a problem on a small display. The high res stream over Ethernet is something that cant be done with the equipment nvidia provided me with which is why I didn't test this method as it is not an 'out of box' experience.

Gamestream on non Shield tablets is not mainstream yet [to my knowlege, happy to be proven wrong] and as such, Shield is the only out of box solution where there is actual optimisation and the implementation of streaming is ready to go the second you power on the device.

Realistically though, as I have already mentioned, the Shield as a tablet is so competitively priced that even without any USP, it is still a strong competitor in the mobile device market at its current price point.

This is what I find most odd about Pottsey's arguments against this tablet. Even without any of the game streaming features, it's still one of, if not the best android tablet in this size currently available. Coupled with the low price, it's fantastic!

It's not perfect, but I can't think of anything I'd rather get if I was in the market for a tablet of this size. So the extra features are a bonus, on what is already potentially the best tablet around.
