Grudas asked a question about what we run and I answered. For my commute I do not need or want guards that rattle and are a pain to attach/remove/clean. I'm not telling you to strip them off your bikes.:p

Regarding waterproof gear surely everyone owns a waterproof jacket anyway unless you don't cycle in the rain? Add some overshoes and you are sorted. When it isn't actually raining and there is just drizzle or surface water, in my experience I don't get wet anywhere that guards would help with except for the butt crack hence the ass saver. As usual...IMO, YMMV etc etc etc.

@uniQ - Certified crazy! I shall be staying in fettling.

Was going out for a ride this arvo, took the dog for a walk and its just to cold, had 6 layers on and a double coat and I was still freezing! The winds the problem, -10 at 18mph is not a good idea

Hi guys, new to road bikes and have just picked up a used Felt F95 last week. (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/felt-f95-2012/)

I would like to eventually upgrade the brakes to some Shimano 105 callipers but am a bit confused as to whether they will work with the Microshift brake levers fitted on the bike. I can't find any information about whether the pull ratio would be compatible with the Shimano brakes. Anybody have any ideas?

Cheers

Just updated my training blog @ http://thomaswhatley.blogspot.co.uk/

Be great to have some of your thought on it.

I know nothing about triathlon training but looks like you're working hard. Motivation is a battle for everyone I think - I have weeks where I can't wait to get on the bike and others where I really CBA. I just try and think about how good I will feel after the session and how bad I'll feel if I don't do it.

I was struggling today but did Clark on TrainerRoad: http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/268629

Easily the hardest session to date but got through it! I have a week left of the Intermediate I plan then I'm going to have an unstructured week and maybe do a couple of Sufferfests with an easy ride in between. After that I'll reassess my FTP and start Intermediate II. The proof is in the test obviously but I'm hoping my FTP will be up to at least 155 from where I started at 141.

After my session I spent the afternoon building up the missus' new commuter/winter bike:

Planet X Team Alu frame and finishing kit
Planet X AL30 wheels
Apex chainset and rear mech
Rival shifters and front mech

I stashed the battery for her CREE XML T6 light in the bottle on the seatpost cage and ran the power cable up along the toptube, looks pretty tidy if I do say so myself!

Rides really nicely (albeit a bit small for me!) - the frame is stiff and accelerates really well but isn't too jarring. Just need to sort out the front mudguard fin which is rubbing, and bend the rear one tighter to the wheel.

Yeah, it's a great frame (and not just great "for the money"). Just be aware that it has quite a short headtube as it's originally intended as a racing/criterium frame so if you're between sizes it might be worth going for the bigger one.

Ok. I'm a bit of a freaky shape anyway, as I have short legs and a long torso, so that might play into what sort of frames I get. Like I either get a small frame and a longer stem, or a larger frame and have the saddle so low that people point and laugh.

Coldest and longest ride ever. 133miles/214km 10,000ft climbing + 10mi there and back from mine = 153 miles for the day

I was the first one back in 150+ riders so pretty pleased with that effort! :)

Of course. But it's still nice to be the first back as I pushed myself hard. The 133mi KOM segment is quite nice too :). It was so cold my gears stopped working I flipped the bike over and icicles had formed all over the cables so they weren't moving when shifting :o

I'd like to do audax stuff when I'm older and more experienced and - crucially - when I have more time. Maybe in 15 years when I get the kids off to uni...

Sorry, mind on other things.

That's an epic effort, especially given the current conditions. I'm thinking about doing Manchester - London later in the year after being inspired by some audaxers I know.
