Grudas asked a question about what we run and I answered. For my commute I do not need or want guards that rattle and are a pain to attach/remove/clean. I'm not telling you to strip them off your bikes.
Regarding waterproof gear surely everyone owns a waterproof jacket anyway unless you don't cycle in the rain? Add some overshoes and you are sorted. When it isn't actually raining and there is just drizzle or surface water, in my experience I don't get wet anywhere that guards would help with except for the butt crack hence the ass saver. As usual...IMO, YMMV etc etc etc.
