**** pusing a 53/11.

53/11 is what all the cool kids use.

On a big downhill, it's good for 50+mph.
Last weekend, strava says i hit 51.2mph (link).
To be fair, thats probably the only time i'v ever really maxed out that gear - i'm too scared to do that on a normal ride.

The benefit you'd get caused by reducing the weight is minimal, it's something dumb like 3s/kilo up Alpe d'Huez. That may be an exaggeration but it's not a lot.

You may see a difference in a stiffer frame with less compliance in the right places meaning that more power goes into the wheels.

You will see a difference from a better fitting bike.

If your bike fits well then get new wheels.

Edit; not sure why or how the thumb down appeared.

I suppose taken as a whole the bikes weight isn't that massive a factor compared to my 75kg.. What would better wheels do?

I need to follow a good bike fit guide, I guess as long as I can get within tolerances of that then the bike fits me?

@Berger Merlin & Ribble both showing stock on ultegra 6800 :)

All I need now is one of those bargain basement Scott frames :(

I had the email this morning telling me they were in so had a look on both sites.

Neither show the new 52/36 crankset yet, and they are sold out of the 175mm length cranks too.

They don't seem to be discounting 6700 Ultegra much, expected bigger discounts on it...

Thinking of buying a pair of Rapha shorts and Jersey as I too have a 15% off anything code. Then see how much tax I get back when I get round to doing my return.

Not sure what frame or bike I would like to buy, nothing really has caught my eye that's a reasonable price. I liked the Treks but the compact chain set on the models in my price point was a bit :-/ I'd be looking at a 4 or 5 series madone or domane. The shop also do quite a bit of Cannondale, not looked at their range.

The other shop in town does Giant, and the town over do Specialised.

I could always just buy wheels and group set for my current frame, perhaps get a proper fit done to see if I can improve my comfort on it, as I feel it's a little big at the moment. And get rid of the stupid BB30!

I took a 30t cassette to the Alps and I don't think it was overkill. When you hear people saying you only need a 27t over there I assume they mean for people that mash up hills at 60rpm!

Winner! I won the Handicap A/B/C race today, 55km with 650m climbing, average speed of just under 35kmh.

The handicapper seemed fairly generous with my groups handicap time and all the groups were quite big apart from scratch who only had 3 or 4 riders. Got to ride with what you have got I guess.

It's a bit of a balancing act as I climb better than I do on the flats. I was one of the first up the CAT4 climb that was early on but made sure I stayed with the group. Then a longer CAT3, some people started shouting at the bottom about the pace, but personally I'm not going to hold back on the climb for someone I know has loads of power on the flats!

The group split up on the climb, with about 6 of us riding together dropping the guys who struggle with the climbs, then half way up another bloke and myself started to pull away. We could see the group in front of us who were virtual leaders on the road at that point which helped spur us on a bit. We caught them just before the crest of the climb, good to take a breather on the way down then.

I started having chest pains after going over the top, but thought "she'll be right" in the true Aussie way, and sure enough, after 10 minutes of hurting it passed! We got to the turn around which normally marks the point where people start to hammer it, the 4-5 guys from our the group which we dropped on the climb caught us now. The leading group was a bit inexperienced and wasn't working together very well. I realised that the 4-6 from my original group were going to catch us so sat up a little bit not wanting to work too hard.

Going back the pace was quite good, but with a mix of abilities some people would pull a turn then slow right up, it got a bit dangerous, the commissionaire spoke to everyone after the race. Apparently a few riders crossed the centre of the road, there was quite a bit of surging and not much rhythm. I was riding towards the front of the bunch in case it split going over a few pinches so didn't really see much of it. I did notice people not pulling a turn and just sitting on which is annoying, but not much you can do about that.

Anyway, we all stayed away from B grade who started 6.5 minutes after us and the scratch group were 12.5 I think! Came down to a sprint finish, there was a bit of bumping and barging before we got towards the line. I was about 7th wheel coming into the last corner, one guy was popped and sat up straight away, then most guys went to the right. I stayed sitting (I've found if I stand I end up with loads of wind resistance from being tall, and I risk causing my legs to cramp up), hooked in behind them and built up a decent cadence, then flew past on the left perfectly, held it off for the last 20m or so to the line to take the win!

The bad news is that I have now been promoted so will be racing B grade from now onwards...... I won't be winning anything for a while, just struggling to hang on!

How many miles should a cassette be good for? I'm wondering whether I need to replace mine. I've put nearly 3,000 miles into it, and it's second hand so who knows how much before that.

It's only a Sora one, so not expensive, maybe £20-25.

I got around 15000 out of my HG50 cassette before finally replacing the whole groupset with ultegra 6700

So Aldi wrote back to me today after complaining about their shoes (got a call from them yesterday too). Was pretty straight forward, apologetic and I get a full refund on my shoes when I drop it off in store, along with £5 voucher.

Their customer service redeemed themselves from me avoiding their non-food products.

Berger, that is awesome. Well done dude.

I really want to get into racing next year, not sure where to start really, think I'll get in on the local cycling clubs TT for starters...

Got a couple KOM's I've been working towards tonight, excellent. :)

Anyone recommend a cheapish, fitted, lightweight jersey? I've got a load of cycling ones at the moment but they're a bit baggy and don't look quite right/slow me down by precious milliseconds!

I was given one of these for my birthday last month and it's a good fit (in XL) for me.

Had an amazing ride this morning, just gorgeous conditions.

Also had a nice comedy moment (for me anyway, not the other guy!). There's a 3 stage hill (climb - flat - climb - flat - climb) near me and as I came to it today I saw two guys just ahead of me so thought I'd see if I could catch them. One of the buzzed off way to quick but the other guy I was reeling in, reasonably quickly at first but then I took chunks out of the gap and on the second climb I caught his rear wheel. I was just about to blast past him when he grunted in agony and stopped. He'd been stung on the nose :(.

Bloody weather forecast is useless!

I was expecting rain today so went out for a short ride last night with oli instead. Wake up this morning and it's sunny. FU weatherman.

Yeah I know right!

I was planning to go for an early ride, but when I saw the weather I decided last night to tinker with the bike instead and need a new front derailleur cable before I can go out. I was resigned to the fact that it would be tipping it down with torrential rain so it was no loss.... not the case though!
