so.. Endomondo calorie counts.. are they just completely wrong? 16 mile commute home, Endomondo says 1037 calories. Export as a GPX and import into Strava, and Strava says 427 calories for the exact same journey. What gives?

Somewhere between 40 and 50 calories per mile seems to be the best estimate.

That tends to be what I go with for an average ride. Given my height and weight I err towards 50 but if I ever manage to tone up properly I'll probably assume 40.

edit: this is based on my riding, which tends to be enough to get a light sweat and an increase heart rate. I don't absolutely kill myself with effort, however.

I always do and my t-shirt, shorts etc are WET when I get home.. :) but that's just the way I ride and I'm not one of those people that sweat a lot unless I workout really hard.
 
On endomondo I always just had my weight in at half I think as the figures were a bit more believable then.

Garmin with HR monitor is supposed to be more accurate, since it has a bit more information over how hard you're working. But I'm not sure how much I can believe this.

Ride today was 35 miles at a moving average of 14.1 mph so took 2.5 hours, 1300ft of climbing and avg heart rate was 165 (max I'm guessing atm may be around 200). It reckons I burnt 2,447 calories.

Now I may weigh 100kg so naturally am going to burn more calories but does that seem way to high?

I'm thinking I'll just take 80% of what garmin gives me, 1980 calories or 56.5 per mile which seems more believable.

Well, I have great bladder control so my shorts aren't wet when I get in ;)

Knowing uv, I think he rides more like you do. I do sometimes have enough energy to push myself that hard but it's quite rare. Having someone in front of me on an SS can inspire me at times though :p

Had my bike fit yesterday. It was a very interesting experience and one I would recommend for any serious cyclist. Ended up with some quite significant changes. Saddle up 15mm. Saddle also now more level (-1 degree). Shorter stem now 110m. Bars and shifters slightly adjusted. Felt a fairly immediate power increase at same effort level and much less quad burn.

The fitter was very thorough and explained everything really well. Turns out that my chinavelo frame is actually well suited to be. The fitter also explained the significance of looking at stack and reach vs things like ETT. He recommended an R3 as a very suitable bike for me - bad man!!

If anyone wants any further details of what was done then let me know.
 
I'm very tempted by a bike fit but I'm also pretty aware of my physiological limitations at the moment - I have tight hamstrings and hip issues that result in my rounding my back and massively reducing my effective reach. I'd made good progress on improving things last year but they've relapsed a bit.

Sort of feel I should get to a point where I'm happy with my strength and flexibility rather than fitting the bike to a substandard version of myself, if that makes sense.

Who was your fit with?

what system did your fitter use?

Can anyone recommend me some safety glasses/goggles? I need something that I can either wear over my prescription glasses, or use prescription lenses in them (I'm short-sighted, I can't wear contact lenses, and don't want laser treatment).

For some reason my eyes have become a magnet for grit/dust, and my normal glasses don't seem to offer much defence :)

I'd love a pair but I remember being quoted about £200 when I last got prescription sunnies, which was probably about five years ago. Wish I'd gone for the Oakleys then instead of the Ray-Bans I did buy (not aviators I hasten to add).

I'd be tempted to get some prescription Oakley lenses for my Choakleys though, they've been faultless to date.
 
I'm quite happy with my £3 aldi ones.. no prescription lenses obviously and during summer they're unusable due to sweat.
