Road Cycling Essentials

Any recommendations for decent cheap 18650 batteries? I have a grand total of one battery for my bigass bright Cree light, and it doesn't last long. I'm looking on ebay, and if you're prepared to get things shipped from Hong Kong with a 6 week lead time you can get batteries with an alleged 6000mAh capacity for like a quid, but who knows if they're actually any good.

Any tips?

Bought these myself at the start of winter;

Hindley isn't too bad. There's a couple of roundabouts just beyond Abram, then one set of lights and another roundabout in Hindley itself, and then you're pretty much in the clear up to Aspull and then through Haigh or Blackrod, depending on which approach you take.

What is the A6 like for cycling down? Seems like quite a fast road for cars.

Another alternative route up for me would be up past Pennington Flash, taking the road through Leigh to Atherton, to Westhoughton then onto the A6 up to the right hand turning to the reservoir along Grimeford Lane.

The A6 round our way is OK if you're happy with cars coming by at 40mph. YMMV. The main problem with the A6 is that the road surface is ruinous. The A6 serves a purpose, and that purpose is to get somewhere nice to cycle. It doesn't stop me TTing along it from time to time, mind you.

You're better going up through Hindley. Nicer roads, not as busy.

Here is a route that I'd use to get to Adlington, do the IMUK loop and get home again. I'd meet you at Hindley crossroads if we were doing the ride together. Looking at it, the busiest bit of the ride traffic wise would be from about 17 to 27 miles, as the speed limit on the moor heading to the M65 is pretty high, and then it can be a bit busy heading from the M65 back towards Chorley. Beyond that, it's all fairly quiet.

Can you patch a tyre?

Reason I ask is after my puncture earlier this week, replaced the tube and all was well. However going out tonight and I notice a very tiny spot where there mark on the tyre. It is very very small but it does seem to be thru the tyre. it's literally 1mm/2mm max. Tyre has plenty of life in it but going out for potentially 50/60 miler on saturday and don't fancy any issues with it.

I have ordered a replacement (Conti GP4 seasons) but wondering if I can save the same tyre? Is there any patches or alike you can put on the inside of the tyre?

I've patched mountain bike tyres I run tubeless when the holes are to big for sealant to work with traditional inner tube patches and glue. They're only run at about 30psi though and I'm not sure I'd be entirely confident doing the same at road pressures. I'd certainly try it out on a local ride though staying within reasonable walking distance of home.

Going back to my saddle question, I consciously thought about it when I was riding last night. It feels like very little of my weight is on my sit bones, and like much more is resting in between. Maybe my bones are a bit farther apart or less prominent than most? Or maybe I've got a bulkier bifkin than normal people? In any case, maybe I need a bit of a cutout in the middle, or at least some extra room in the middle. I think I'm going to have to look at my two saddles side by side and see how much of a difference there is in the shape.

I glue tyres back together with a rubber based superglue, like Black Witch (used for my wetsuits) or Gorilla glue.

I find Cutout saddles are the absolute worst.

Thanks - will have a go at that. It is a tiny tiny hole, and it may be more physiological that anything that I spotted this tiny hole!

Cheshire East has seen a nasty outbreak of signs warning of roads being stone-chipped soon - I hate riding on that stuff, just seems to be so "draggy"

Riding on the stuff can be so tedious!

This stretch of road is diabolical. They stone chipped it around 12 months ago. And now it has all come up and it is horrendously bumpy with loose chippings on the surface. They made it worse essentially!!

On a ride last weekend I saw the ominous sight of a huge pile of chippings waiting to be distributed.

Well the weather isn't looking too great for this evening. I was planning on a post-work ride :(

The council have stuck a new cycle path in nearby here. The state of it..I really want to find out how much it cost.

It's not open yet, and the service is already coming away..
