Road Cycling Essentials

Guys, only a week until I'm out in Majorca and just realised I don't have hardly any routes, does anyone have gpx files they could possibly send me? Will be staying in Alcudia and want to take in the Puig and Sa Calobre as minimums. Wouldn't mind a few flatter routes for recovery days, and any recommendations for places to eat/drink would be great.

Here's my strava links from the last time I was in mallorca:

It's not too difficult to navigate around the island. You can pick up little maps in various shops super cheap, I think I got given one for free in the airport. You just need to know which town you're heading for next and then you can use the road signs to find your way around.

Sa Calobre is well worth doing. I dont have a gpx for that though because I didnt have a garmin the time I did it.

Go to the cake shop in Muro too. It's on the 2nd last strava link above. I got a little lost in the town but you can see where I stopped.
There's a nice cafe called Dolc Dolc on the main square in Petra which does good pizzas.
Pretty much any town you go to will have a main square with a cafe. They all do very good coffee and usually baguettes/sandwiches.

I'm going over at the end of March this year - cant wait :D

Welcome back fella! Coincidence you've appeared as that's exactly what we've been talking about! Did you intentionally take a long break from the bike or was it due to injuries/other reasons?

Well i probably needed a couple of weeks to allow the missing skin on the top of my thigh to heal properly but after that laziness kicked in and i didnt bother.

No other reason really, i had a bit of nervousness getting back on but that disappeared after a couple of miles.

First ride of the year this evening. 23 miles, 16.3mph average. Several 2015 top 10s and a 2015 KOM, which is 15s off my own best time and nearly 2 minutes down on [Damien]'s all time KOM, so that won't last long.

I got raged at by some idiot coming through town towards the end of the road. As I was riding along two lads started crossing the road from the other side. They stopped in the middle of the road to wait for me, which meant that the guy in the car behind me couldn't overtake so he was mashing his horn like mental and then gave me the finger when he eventually overtook. So I get the fury from some idiot car driver because of two pedestrians crossing the road badly... Seems legit.

Good grief! There's just no arguing with those who will not listen is there.

I can't imagine it's ever worth arguing with drivers to be honest. I don't trust them one bit. I'd be passing the mouth of that junction wider than the cyclist did, just because I wouldn't trust that they wouldn't pull out on me.

Anyone ordered from Quella? It's a fixie bike shop and it's more than a bit on the hipster side but they've got a few parts way cheaper than I can get them elsewhere - sprocket with a lock ring for £6.49, seatclamp in the size I need for way cheaper than Planet X...

Anything to report?

just seen this come up on youtube

I wouldn't say he was arguing, the old boy in the car (similar age to the guy who knocked me off) looked terrified so I really don't blame him for not getting out... I'm still not convinced he understood what the cyclist was saying - which seems the worst as although it was a totally over the top reaction he was 100% right about the guys visibility!

Looking at the guys other videos and responses to comments he is quite an actor/drama queen.

To be honest there is no excuse at that junction, it's wide open, looks like a great road surface and the main road looks clear and wide to overtake a cyclist after the junction?

The weather/time of year really doesn't help with that either! It took me a couple of rides to get my confidence back. I guess it's confidence in our own abilities to notice danger and to take the correct road position rather than confidence in other drivers (which will take much longer to get back!).

We've had the shortest day and the mornings are getting lighter so visibility is getting better, hopefully we'll see a decrease in these kinda incidents!

Duur.. 2 days at work and I turn ill! What a poof lol

MTFU! :p

Although I'll admit to taking a second rest day this week - making sure I'm fully rested for my snowboarding holiday next week! ;):D

Asprilla, I think a found a bike shop in China from a cycling blog you'd like... :D

Yeah, the cyclist in the video came across as a bit of a ***** to be honest. The driver was in the wrong for "not seeing" him but given that he apologised and such there was no need for that reaction.

I agree with the above comment about going out further into the road at junctions like that. Drivers often pull quite far out even when they intend to stop

I think the cyclist did pretty well to keep his language under control. I would have been ****** all over the shop. The driver couldn't see a damn thing.

The driver was certainly in the wrong and definitely needed to sort his screen out but I guess my way of deriding people tends to be more cold and condescending rather than blind rage :)

Awesome!! You will love it. Going for my third year in a row this year :)

Just like touch, here are a few of my routes from previous years:

https://www.strava.com/activities/161529521 - Lovely descent down Col de sa Batalla
https://www.strava.com/activities/161529549 - Great climb up Col de sa batalla, then on to Sa Calobra
https://www.strava.com/activities/161529534 - Amazing route. It is gorgeous through the Orient valley. Then up the "pig".
https://www.strava.com/activities/161529491 - This is a beautiful route. The second half of the road was terribly bumpy. But I have heard that it has now been resurfaced - making this route a must!

You're in a great location. You have easy access to the hills to the north, and then some flatter rides to the south if you're looking for something more relaxing :)

epic cycling, fallowed by epic driving.. the bus driver just carried on squeezing every cyclist in his way! I just stayed behind ha.
