Road Cycling Essentials

It's going to be April until I can get out in the evenings again after work. I've started going on a few runs in between the gym and weekend cycling recently. Hopefully it will do me good :)

yeah! yesterdays ride to gym was a PAIN! crazy headwind, sleet, dark and cold! 2 miles of massive pain! thought I'll be crying blood by the end!

as the ride proves I've been struggling getting over 15mph on my way to gym! amazing :) back home was better tho ;)

Must have been pretty painful when you fell down that 250ft gap half way through

haha I stop my garmin, switch it off.. and when I get back to the bike it always messes up the elevation data :D dont ask me why ;)

on that note, my bro banged his front so bad over pothole that his front tyre exploded and bars moved down... surprised he didn't flip over!

I guess it's the change in pressure/temperature/etc or something. Makes for an amusing graph at least :p

That pot hole situation sounds pretty bad. I've hit quite a few lately but my tyres and wheels seem to have held up. Must be all the cutting I've been doing :p

any pointers on a good winter/cold weather softshell windproof jacket/jumper etc?

Don't want to go mad on price.

dHb ones any good?

Should be good.
I have the Blade which is effectively the same but with underarm zipper vents. It's good by itself down to about 5-6 degrees.
With this windchill at the moment (-4ish) I'm currently using it with 2 Helly Hansen base layers and Vaeon Zero Padded Bib Tights.

nice - what's the fit like size wise?

Had my first collision today!

Slow moving traffic in both lanes, car starts to pull out from my left (well, more like push his way in) which distracts me a bit so I glanced left quickly and then ahead again, SUV in front of me brakes suddenly to let another car out and before I know it I've hit it :o

Less than 10 mph so nothing serious, but annoying as completely avoidable and my fault really!

Was all set to cycle today as my wrist is pretty much healed up from my off over Christmas, but yesterday's lunch time run I managed to fall over this time messing up my elbow. Same arm, just glad I didn't do the wrist again really. Knees not great but movement feels ok today so hopefully I can finally get on the bike this weekend.

Really need to get a turbo so I can get something when the weather's too bad.

I haven't been out on the road bike since March last year  because of a combo between a serious knee injury and subsequent surgery. Been out a few times on canal paths on my hardtail but if I hit a hill which I'd previously have had to get out of the saddle to climb my knee just can't cope, and that's after the surgery! Been doing 30-40km x4 times a week in the gym on a Lifecycle but it's not the same. Itching to get back on the road again but its going to take a while to build up to it. :(

I'm going to have a very minor op at the start of Feb that will keep me off the bike (and even turbo) for at least a week, possibly more like a month. Really not looking forward to how much it is going to bugger up my fitness :(

It's a nightmare m8. My surgery hasn't gone as well as it should but I really should be thankful that at least I've managed to return to work on operational duties at long last. My fitness is shot to bits too, I'll be back to square one as far as cycling ability/fitness/distance/speed etc goes once I finally get back in the saddle again. But it's the whole uncertainty of how the knee will hold out that I'm concerned about. I had a partial arthroscopic meniscectomy which unfortunately turned into almost a full meniscectomy once they got inside there and had a good look around to see what needed done. All the best for your surgery, FrenchTart, hope it goes smoother than mine!

Really sorry to hear that. Hopefully it will gradually improve from here for you. For me it's not knee-related (sorry to be so vague) and more upper body but should be hopefully fairly minor compared to what you have just described. I'm really hoping I can be back to where I am now by mid-March so I make the most of spring and the extra daylight. I guess we'll see.
