on that note.. those that ride everyday, how do you deal with bum pain? padded shorts, saddles etc don't help! it just seems to rub on a different part of my bum haha.

but it is getting quite bad.. ! which is annoying the crap out of me

This is why I use Paypal pay after delivery with Wiggle etc. No money is taken up front so if there are problems or I return an item you don't have to wait for a refund, they just cancel the future payment. Worth a look. :)

What pads have you tried? Also, could be the Tioga Spyder being dodgy.

I presume you've had a bike fit?

Interesting. I didn't know that was an option. I often pay via Paypal but just pay up front. I'll have to move to pay after delivery.

Haha - glad someone else mentioned this. I have a boil on my arse the size of a marble!

Fresh shorts every ride made a big difference, even when I ride to work (only 2 miles), I'll take a spare pair to change into on the way home.
Antibiotic/antiseptic cream seems to help when it get's really bad.

I didn't realise you could do this. Excellent idea for the future. Thanks :)

I have three pairs of DHB shorts, some aldi shorts etc but neither one of them do the job, they're comfy but over weeks/months of continued cycling I still get the pain no matter what I do.

different saddles simply result in different parts hurting, it's not my marbles, it's the skin that goes poof.

no bike fit, I wonder if it would help tbh..

yup, I do wear fresh shorts, every ride but nothing.. might try a different saddle again and see if it does anything eh :o got 4 already!

I would be surprised if a bike fit didn't help tbh. After me not being sure about them for a long time I'm now completely sold on them. Really useful.

When my skin gets rubbed badly I use a chamois cream (or just sudocream as someone on here suggested a while back) and it really helps.

I always use pay after delivery. Never had any issues with Wiggle though, they're normally spot on.

Set my turbo up the other night with an old wheel and a turbo tyre. So dull though, need to fit cadence sensor and sort out Trainer Road.

it can be dull - but last night I did a 45 min blast on trainerroad whilst watching the Man Utd game - it passed fairly quickly to be honest as it was -4 degrees out side:D

How tired are your legs? I'd be tempted to go straight in for an FTP test personally. It may mean you get a lower FTP than you would do otherwise but it will at least mean you've got a good base to work from (and it's always satisfying to get rapid gains if your FTP is read a little low initially) :)

I'm planning on jumping on the turbo a little later hopefully. No more running until the weekend though.

Do you really find that the Road Machine needs more resistance btw? The gear set up on my turbo bike allows 50 * 11 and I doubt I could spin away for long with that

50/34 rings with 12-26 (I think). To me the top resistance should be something you really struggle to turn except when standing and grinding hard, but I guess that's not what a Turbo is for! :D

My legs are ok as did no real weekend riding and 2 easy days commuting as well as a rest day today (to drive to the post office depot after work). Same opinion as you - get a baseline before I've done no real training towards it - so I see gains when I do! :D

I just want some tyres, or the money back to go elsewhere. I'm angry that they want me to wait till after the weekend, when they've already admitted that package has been lost.

I understand that mistakes happen, and deliveries can't always be made, but I would expect better customer service.

A bit mean that Wiggle won't replace/duplicate the order as they know it is lost, have you asked CS if they are able to do that (without charging you a second time!)?

Thought any bum pains were saddle/fit related! Considered a nice padded leisurely saddle for some of your commuting? A Brooks or something? Lots of long distance riders swear by the Brooks leather than any other.

I only get pain from chaffing after a long hard turbo session, I've never had it from riding on the road but then again my bum has lots of padding! :p:rolleyes:

Thanks for that! Then again probably more useful with unknown websites, never had a problem with Wiggle and they credit very quickly.

This, or sudocream. I have a friend who swears by Bepanthen, but I think that's more for actual injuries in the area not chaffing/rubbing...

This looks a good budget buy: http://www.thebikefactory.co.uk/productdetails.asp?productid=75134 (£450 Specialised Allez 2014, 2300, carbon forks, pickup only from Chester in 56/58 sizes only in White) if anyone is after a cheap starter/anyone asks. How does it compare with the Felt 95?

Came up with a target for myself this year: http://www.strava.com/routes/1405522

I'm hoping my years of squats and deads will have helped with that but I do agree, I'm very worried about injuring myself due to muscle imbalances and my cardio fitness being higher than my body's ability to deal with the stress of running.

Weirdly my shins are fine today. That makes me more worried than if they ached a little bit :p
Very different type of muscle usage though. The aerobic slow twitch for running is quite different to the anaerobic type for heavy lifting. It's DOMS, it's just a different type of DOMS :p

Lol @ shins. Shin splints affect people in different ways and, as well as being distance related, it's also affected by the surface you run on and your running technique. Increasing the distance is usually what gets novice runners. Start out small and increase your distance slowly. If you've never really run much before, don't go from 2.5k, then straight to 5k and then start running multiple 5k+ during the week. This is what causes most leg injuries. Really give yourself a gentle lead in and increase the total distance by no more than about 10% per week. Sounds tedious, but it really gives your body a chance to toughen up if you do it that way, and it keeps you injury-free in the long term.

I find it is really mostly in the saddle, but to date I've only found one saddle that really suits me. Unfortunately it was a GT Royal which was discontinued many years ago and I've never found anything exactly the same shape. I rode a 100 miler without padding on that thing, sat on it all week and never felt a thing :(

That seems to be inevitable from time to time. I think it's where a hair gets snapped off at the base and goes ingrown. I don't think it's a hygiene thing so much.

still not on the bike
grrrrrrrrr

been under the weather for 5 weeks now, this is the 6th week, got another appointment with the doc this afternoon

cant get out this sunday, so next Wednesday im hoping to be back on the bike (fingers crossed)

I hope you get back on soon. I can't imagine the feeling. I feel bad for not managing to get out and do more than 15 miles in a single ride in over a month.

I've not shaved my legs yet, does that mean I need to shave my arse too? :p

Again and again I look at the Castelli gear, mostly the Gabba and can't justify the price to myself... Read somewhere that the Sportful gear was almost as good with a much better price tag? So I've been tempted this week by some sales on Wiggle... Mainly the Pista jerseys and grupetto tights and jerseys. Does anyone have any Sportful clothing? Thoughts on the quality and sizing?

Makes grudas look slow! Scary stuff! I'll upload mine (from yesterday) later ;)

Absolutely achievable! All you need to worry about is that climb which looks pretty tasty. The rest is essentially flat which you know you can do.

Edit: Just "street viewed" that climb. Very nice :)

The distance should be ok, the majority of it is on fairly fast A roads so I'll defo be doing it one lazy summer sunday afternoon. The climb I know from driving it (a friend used to live in Dorstone) and there's loads of pubs along the route if I need to stop for a breather! ;)

There's another climb there up a no-through-road but nobodies made a segment there... Yet! ;)

Edit: Found it!
https://www.strava.com/segments/6470079 and the top part of this one https://www.strava.com/segments/2615092

Should be almost 1000 ft of climbing in 2 miles :)
