I'm being lazy, but my brother is looking to spend about £1k on a new road bike, currently has an old bianchi with campag, (circa 15 years old)

Boardman Pro Carbon
Planet X Pro Carbon (Ultegra 6800, seems very good value)
Canyon/Rose Offerings

What else is there out there, I reckon I can get him to up his budget by couple of hundred, would ideally like him on something with 11sp 105 and full carbon. More for sportives and enjoyment riding than something super quick.

Ive heard halfords are doing 15% off boardmans this weekend.

These are the wheels: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=281482529183

I'd already picked up a sturmey archer (sunrace) freewheel separately. As you say, I hear they're all not that great unless you spend silly money for one by white industries.

Those are really heavy! Like 2ish kg with tyre for the rear hah! Haro does an alright freewheel! My brother had it for a while :) all dictas etc failed in spectacular way! Flipped over the bars with the last one while pedaling under power, out of saddle!

Where are you getting the weight from?

I expect I'll pick up some decent wheels at some point, but I wanted something to get started with.

My achilles I thought I'd hurt on the Turbo is much better but my calf on the same leg is feeling more 'tired' than the other. ACL is fine now too, can only feel it and my achilles when I walk, they're fine when riding?!:cool:

Leg is much better today, took it easy on my commute in... On the way home last night I could easily ride at 150bpm but really struggled to keep it low on the way back in this morning, majority of the time my HR was around 160/170, would there be a reason for this? I assure you I wasn't excited to be heading back to work lol ;)

Fortunately there was only minor pants pooping and I was able to finish off the ride.
<snip>
Oh yeah, I ordered a spare mini pump bracket for my new bike from Tredz and it came with a bag of Haribo in the jiffy bag. Everyone wants to be Wiggle...

Love your ride title lol

I had Haribo from Wheelies a week or so ago and even from superstar when I ordered the Garmin upfront mount (which is excellent, thanks whoever recommended it!). Looking forward to my Tredz orders arrival now lol :D

am I going to get a much better bike for £400? Not really. Whereas if I spend £200 on getting it repainted and replacing some parts I'll have a bike that is eminently mine, and tragically I think that counts for something! I'm embarrassingly attached to a naff bike :p

£400 (or there abouts) can get you a very good S/H bike. Kinda cool you're attached to it, I was to my Virtuoso, then I saw the resell value, weight difference and lack of 'niggles' other people have with bikes in a similar price bracket... ;)

I've got the Board Team Carbon which was just under a grand and it's really very good. Fairly light carbon frame (whole bike is 8.7kg according to my bathroom scales) but obviously that involves a trade off with components. I plan on eventually upgrading to an Ultegra groups and fancy wheels so it was a decent choice for me, but if I wanted better equipment straightaway I'd have gone with a Canyon.

My Giant Defy 1 2015 (alu frame, carbon forks) is lighter than your Team Carbon. Also lighter than the Cube linked. Buying towards the cheaper end of carbon doesn't necessarily give you a lighter bike any longer! ;)

I usually shout "on your wheel" if I am behind them, or "on your right/left" if I am overtaking them or moving into a position parallel to them, such as on club rides, etc.

Ok thanks, useful! :D

I can't see a weight in the description but it's pretty common for cheap deep-rim alloy fixie/ss to be super heavy. They've got a ton of spokes too. More than my CX wheels.

I wouldn't worry too much mate. There's a number of reasons this could have happened; slight headwind, not enough sleep, illness, could simply just be a bad day. My heart rate jumps up in busy traffic :) Eventually, you kind of get used to understanding your body.

The Cube I linked is an alu frame with carbon fork as well :)

Mix of 105 and Ultegra with decent Mavic Aksium wheels, my next bike I think!

Ouch! Not what you want in the middle of London traffic, I guess. Bladed or flat spokes?

bladed, and it's bent! will probably be ok to cycle home but my front brakes are very dangerous right now!

:o will probably have to fit my campy wheel from triban for now..

my brother had a set on his single speed, they're the same "no-logo" wheel just rebranded, I believe with 350g tyre + tube + wheel + freewheel it was 1980g for the rear :o

This had me in hysterics at work - http://traumfahrrad.com/2012/01/22/race-blade-longs-sks-vs-crud/

The guys style of writing really got to me. When I should be working not reading about bikes online :o  ;)

they extend right down and are thus good at keeping spray off your riding companions. that’s if your riding companions have opted to wait, or instead put the hammer down when you are eating a banana and left you alone to bang your face repeatedly against a block headwind whilst they saunter up the road in their own belgian echelon. bas****s. in which case next time you go out don’t use any mudguards and give them a mouthful of ebola-infected slurry from north somerset’s finest country lanes.

Overtaking Cars Turning Left

Right, can I get some opinions on this,

when a car speeds in front of you and then indicates left to turn left at a turning 20 meters infront of you....what do you do?

Yesterday an Audi did the above but stopped waiting for me to pass with his indicator on in the middle of the road. I had already come to a stop waiting for him to turn and eventually once I passed him he looked at me like i was an idiot, cars behind beeping for the Audi to move on.

He then proceeded to drive up alongside me and he and his friend 'talked' to me what was I doing was wrong and that they were being 'nice' and stopped to let me pass (they even had the cheek to say I was going 'too fast'...my argument was they should not have passed me in the first place and indicated to turn but rather stay behind me until I had pass the left hand turn. Then there is no confusion. If he is indicating to turn left...I must presume he will do that right? So I have to stop, otherwise I hit him.

Thoughts? second time this has happened to me and resulted in arguing with drivers. Annoying

happens a lot.. very confusing situation to be in, more often than not drivers dont even expect cyclists to slow down or stop to let them turn but when you do they just sit there going "derp.. beep.. derp... beep... derp... beep... derp... beep" seriously annoying but I often just ride through giving my self enough space in case they do start turning or stop and scream "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" otherwise they don't seem to get the basics.

No way would I proceed down the left side of a vehicle which has just overtaken me and then stopped whilst indicating that they'll be turning left.

This happened to me once, I just stopped and gestured for him to get a move on, he eventually drove forward and made his left turn.

And then they had a go at you? Cheeky gits!

Madness.

I've been in a similar situation, I just ended up waiting behind him continuously "gesticulating" to tell him to get a move on. Just an utterly bizarre incident.

There are a whole other plethora of incidents that I'm sure many on here have come across where drivers try to "do the right thing" or stop to let cyclists through, when really if they just obeyed the rules of the road there would be much less confusion! Its like, I appreciate their gesture, but it'd just be far easier if they actually didn't do it in the first place!
