Oh my god.
Just updated ALL my Strava rides for the past year and a half to select a bike profile (i.e. my current bike) in preparation for my new bike arriving so that I will be able to tell the mileage difference between the two. What a thoroughly brain deadening, laborious task!
would be a 1560+ rides for me
It's painful isn't it! Did it at Christmas time after getting my new bike... 450 rides, then got to one of the last pages and realised not all of the commutes were tagged as commutes so had to start again
So crashed into the side of a bus tonight :/ I'm so angry, never been so scared in my life.
<snip>
Unfortunately, the bus drove off, and I was too shaken to look for a number plate before it got away. I'm pretty sure I have the company name, so will be making a pretty big complaint.
As per Strava, glad you're ok, the shock will subside over the next few days but these things really do shake you up! Take your time, don't think too much of the 'if's and buts' (if anything use them as impetus to get back on the bike and follow it up with bus company and police).
It might be worth reporting it to the police and seeing a doctor.
I'm considering the police, but I don't want to waste their time. Let's be honest, even if I had video evidence, would they actually do anything?
Garmin Virb has been ordered! Does anyone know if I need to buy a handle bar mount separately ?
Defo report it to the Police on 101 (non-emergency, you'll get put through to your local branch). They'll want you to go down to the station within 48 hours to fill out a statement, took me around an hour (Police woman went through the form and filled it in for me "good excuse for a cup of tea"). As you'll be the only person reporting it (unless a witness also did) then it is totally down to you if you want the Police to pursue a prosecution. I didn't for my knock off, totally down to you if you feel you want to or not. The fact you've reported it means the bus company will get a visit to take their drivers statement - you really don't need to chase them to find out who the driver was but a 'heads up' about the accident to the bus company is probably best.
If you're 100% sure you're ok (goto a dr's 'drop in' if you are not 100% sure) then ask the bus company for their insurance details - give them the police incident number so they know you're serious about pursuing for the damage to your bike, helmet and anything else damaged. They should be accomodating (and so will their insurance) if you say you're not injured.
At the very least report it to the Police for statistical purposes - the local council come to them for numbers/locations when they look at funding for anything cycling based. The Police will follow it up - I had a note through my door 6 weeks later (when I was on holiday) about 'taking a statement'. I e-mailed the officer and said I considered the matter resolved as I was ok and the damage had all been paid for so he didn't need to take one.
For the VIRB you'll need a bar mount, I got the official Garmin one from Wiggle for about £12 on a sale. It's amazing quality but quite bulky to have the VIRB on top of the bars (it takes a lot of room). Quite like the way grudas has his mounted 'in front'...
Don't think you need the VIRB "Bike Pack", the battery is loads better than a Go Pro so you'll get 4 hours out of it (Evans had replacement/spare batteries for £22 when I last looked), you will need a microSD card - at least 8GB unless you want to be connecting it every night (rather than every couple). My 20 min commute is usually over 2GB in size (1080p).
