Wow, I hope you're ok.

It shouldn't be too hard to match up the time and a bus company with a driver, particularly if you know or can figure out the route number.

It might be worth reporting it to the police and seeing a doctor.

Thanks. I'm ok, by the time I hit I don't think I was going that fast.

I'm considering the police, but I don't want to waste their time. Let's be honest, even if I had video evidence, would they actually do anything?

Like you say, I think I can work out the route, and Strava should give me the exact time. I'll report it to the company and see what happens.

Garmin Virb has been ordered! Does anyone know if I need to buy a handle bar mount separately ?

Amazon have the Virb Basic for £100 it does not come with a bike mount though. You need the "Bike Pack" which is £50 extra to get the mount and an extra battery included. You could get the £100 Virb and get a K-Edge Go Pro mount which people rate highly, or you get a knock off K-edge mount from china for £5 if you can be bothered to wait the 10 or so days.

So what do people think to doing HIIT/Tabata? I have got myself a heart rate monitor for the turbo and interested in improving my fitness for the summer. The sheer range of recommended exercises though seem confusing, any recommendations? I am after being able to keep a higher intensity over say like an hour sort of time.

Ouch janp, glad to hear you're not in too bad shape, I'd at least phone it through to hampshire constab non emergency line to report it, then chase it up with the bus company, they all have cameras in these days so maybe it caught you through the window. Shouldn't be out of pocket for some bus drivers failure, and next time he could kill someone. Get it reported.

I'd agree with this. I know its not practical for everyone but the above is they very reason I choose a back road route to work so avoid these numptys

Night of mechanics.

Replaced rear derailleur hanger, rear derailleur and new chain :)

Bit of a faff sorting the L and H limit screws and indexing though, but sorted it in the end!

I got my knockoff mount from eBay UK :) took 3 days to arrive, was like 6ish!

Oh my god.

Just updated ALL my Strava rides for the past year and a half to select a bike profile (i.e. my current bike) in preparation for my new bike arriving so that I will be able to tell the mileage difference between the two. What a thoroughly brain deadening, laborious task!

would be a 1560+ rides for me

It's painful isn't it! Did it at Christmas time after getting my new bike... 450 rides, then got to one of the last pages and realised not all of the commutes were tagged as commutes so had to start again :p

So crashed into the side of a bus tonight :/ I'm so angry, never been so scared in my life.

<snip>

Unfortunately, the bus drove off, and I was too shaken to look for a number plate before it got away. I'm pretty sure I have the company name, so will be making a pretty big complaint.

As per Strava, glad you're ok, the shock will subside over the next few days but these things really do shake you up! Take your time, don't think too much of the 'if's and buts' (if anything use them as impetus to get back on the bike and follow it up with bus company and police).

It might be worth reporting it to the police and seeing a doctor.

Defo report it to the Police on 101 (non-emergency, you'll get put through to your local branch). They'll want you to go down to the station within 48 hours to fill out a statement, took me around an hour (Police woman went through the form and filled it in for me "good excuse for a cup of tea"). As you'll be the only person reporting it (unless a witness also did) then it is totally down to you if you want the Police to pursue a prosecution. I didn't for my knock off, totally down to you if you feel you want to or not. The fact you've reported it means the bus company will get a visit to take their drivers statement - you really don't need to chase them to find out who the driver was but a 'heads up' about the accident to the bus company is probably best.

If you're 100% sure you're ok (goto a dr's 'drop in' if you are not 100% sure) then ask the bus company for their insurance details - give them the police incident number so they know you're serious about pursuing for the damage to your bike, helmet and anything else damaged. They should be accomodating (and so will their insurance) if you say you're not injured.

At the very least report it to the Police for statistical purposes - the local council come to them for numbers/locations when they look at funding for anything cycling based. The Police will follow it up - I had a note through my door 6 weeks later (when I was on holiday) about 'taking a statement'. I e-mailed the officer and said I considered the matter resolved as I was ok and the damage had all been paid for so he didn't need to take one.

For the VIRB you'll need a bar mount, I got the official Garmin one from Wiggle for about £12 on a sale. It's amazing quality but quite bulky to have the VIRB on top of the bars (it takes a lot of room). Quite like the way grudas has his mounted 'in front'... ;)

Don't think you need the VIRB "Bike Pack", the battery is loads better than a Go Pro so you'll get 4 hours out of it (Evans had replacement/spare batteries for £22 when I last looked), you will need a microSD card - at least 8GB unless you want to be connecting it every night (rather than every couple). My 20 min commute is usually over 2GB in size (1080p).

Thanks Roady.

The police station is a 2 min walk from work. So I'm going to head over in my lunch hour, and see what they say. I don't have a lot of confidence in them, but as you say good to report it for the stats.

I un-buckled my front wheel this morning, and the bike's rideable, but the front disc brake is rubbing quite badly again. I had a spare helmet, so all good there. Managed to ride into work without any problems this morning.

I'd check carbon components for cracks really.. fork especially !

Glad to hear nothing major with the wheel, if you take it to a LBS for the disc then ask them for a quick once over the frame (fork!) to confirm it's ok. I would report it to the local bus company, even if you don't want compensation for a new helmet - the next time the driver does it someone might not be so lucky! :(

So it appears gangs have been targeting cyclists on the route I take

Looks like it happens outside of times I'm commuting, not sure what I'd do if I encountered them though, plough right in to them perhaps!

Scary stuff, your bike is your best 'weapon'! Pretty sure they won't try anything if you're moving at speed! ;)

Ordered myself
I'd normally order a Large in DHB but by the sizing charts I'm between an XL and XXL in most of the more race fit bib-shorts (65cm thighs and 98cm waist). Tops I've sized by my chest (110cm) and that's out me into XXL as well :rolleyes:

I'm only intending on keeping 1 set of the bib-shorts, just want to try sizing in some other brands than DHB for more colour/tart options. If the Sportful size well I'll get more and probably try some of their shorts too.

I keep looking at a saddle for my trainer, I'm getting some sore bits with any prolonged riding on there. Is the Charge Spoon still one of the better and cheaper ones? This Selle Italia X1 (cut-out middle) is a similar price and reviews ok. Gonna try some of the Wiggle tabs and grab some Assos cream too.

You guys have got me reading up on the Virb. I have £80 of Amazon credit burning a virtual hole in my virtual pocket.

Got mine for around that on the Black Friday sale! ;)

Assos cream is superb. All tingly. Mmmm.

I don't care for GPS, WiFi, accelerometer etc. But does the basic standard Virb not have a microphone?

Edit: Oh, it does.

It does but it is rubbish - can hear the bumps as I go over potholes etc in the road but it won't pick up traffic. It would probably pickup a horn but not voices (unless shouting) while riding. While snowboarding it picked up more so I'm guessing it's something to do with the road/wind noise or the mount covering the hole? There is an external mic you can get if sound is important, unsure how that'd impact on the 'waterproofness' of it.

The GPS/Accelero/cadence/speed/HR etc comes from a ride on another garmin device which you can sync within the software if you want it on your videos (unsure if you can do it with just a .gpx file, couldn't see an option when I looked previously). The Elite I think does it all itself? I've not 'paired' my VIRB to my 810 ('Garmin Remote'?) as I don't see the need to control it - the VIRB side on-off is so quick and easy to use when on your bars. I switch mine on after leaving home and before getting to work (through quiet housing estate and business park where I'm travelling low speed) to save on filesize, battery and for some 'privacy' (still easy to cut and chop afterwards) :)
