Indeed. Platypus for example sent me one of those velcro torch mounts for bike bars / helmets, completely gratis, and it's served me very well over the winter.

I'm now going to need some goretex trainers or something. My carbon soled road shoes are going to be as much use as a chocolate fire guard with standard pedals now. :o

Opps, never thought of that!

I've been using my Shimano R160s on my commute for a few years, they are still absolutely fine, just a few scuffs on the resin. They have done 1000s of miles and been abused on the start/stop fun in London

If we're giving away bike stuff, I have a Carrera Subway 8 with a ruined rear hub that's up for grabs to whoever's willing to come and get it :P

The rear hub is a Shimano Nexus hub and thus contains the gears, and as such the bike is entirely unrideable with it broken :P

Saundie: that was an expensive bike. Must be good for a fixed gear conversion?

Fenix torches are also brilliant, not much brighter but they're built to last. A L2D is my torch of choice, to put in perspective how good it is it was left at the bottom of a shallow lake in France for a couple of hours whilst switched on. I later managed to fish it out (as darkness fell i realized i could see the faint glow of the torch in the water) expecting it to be broken but it was fine.
I'll vouch for that too. The reason the Fenix is expensive is quite obvious. The seals, the fact that the light is regulated (in the £4.99 jobbies it is not), the lens in the front is strong and scratchproof. I really like mine and the closest bike light to it would be something like the Hope Vision 1 which is more expensive and less flexible :)

I had considered trying a fixie conversion, however there are obstacles that I doubt can be overcome. The first and most important one is that it has roller brakes, and no holes on the frame to attach standard rim brakes. I don't know how safe it is to drill holes in aluminium, and I'm not keen on learning via first hand experience. Then there's the expense of adding rim brakes, which I suspect would make it uneconomical once you factor in the cost of the wheels as well.

As for the Di2 Alfine hub - I wish you hadn't made me aware of it's existence, touch. I may well end up going for one of those as an upgrade to my Pompetamine... I thought I was done with buying bike gear for a long time :(

You dont need a rim brake on a fixie.

I'd have at least a brake at the front, preferably both. Only the brave or stupid go brakeless, or those who cycle everywhere at a snail's pace :p

I can't safely pull mine up from cruising speed using leg power alone.

Saundie, is there any way of locking up the gears inside, as in weld it up or fill it with resin? Choose one ratio and then you can use the hub brake and keep the freewheel.

My commute is almost that. It's a piece of **** and I'm no uber fit slim toned up cyclist..
You'd rock that in an hour I reckon.

Best ride..

Worst ride..

Only 3% difference between your best and worst? And how did the hills become taller on the worst, confusing lol.

I'm not sure, the internals of the hub seem pretty complicated - I took it to the bike shop opposite the cinema in Beckenham and the guy managed to get it to work briefly, but from what he told me it's usually a case of "once they're knackered, they cannot be fixed". To be completely honest, I just want to get rid of it and get the space back in the garage, but it'd probably be too much hassle to try to sell it.

Differences in an inaccurate phone app shocker.

If you want the actual, actual worst you can have this one at only 9 miles long??? but I left that out due to mileage inaccuracies I noticed.
If I recall correctly this ride lost GPS on the last section.
