^Why OcUK rocks^
I'm now going to need some goretex trainers or something. My carbon soled road shoes are going to be as much use as a chocolate fire guard with standard pedals now.
Opps, never thought of that!

Trust me your address, I lost my Astrum out riding but still have the bracket so I'll post it to you.

I have a Carrera Subway 8 with a ruined rear hub
The rear hub is a Shimano Nexus hub

I'll vouch for that too. The reason the Fenix is expensive is quite obvious. The seals, the fact that the light is regulated (in the £4.99 jobbies it is not), the lens in the front is strong and scratchproof. I really like mine and the closest bike light to it would be something like the Hope Vision 1 which is more expensive and less flexibleFenix torches are also brilliant, not much brighter but they're built to last. A L2D is my torch of choice, to put in perspective how good it is it was left at the bottom of a shallow lake in France for a couple of hours whilst switched on. I later managed to fish it out (as darkness fell i realized i could see the faint glow of the torch in the water) expecting it to be broken but it was fine.

Size 44/9. Ohh thank you.
I had considered trying a fixie conversion, however there are obstacles that I doubt can be overcome. The first and most important one is that it has roller brakes, and no holes on the frame to attach standard rim brakes.
I'd have at least a brake at the front, preferably both. Only the brave or stupid go brakeless, or those who cycle everywhere at a snail's paceYou dont need a rim brake on a fixie.

My commute is almost that. It's a piece of **** and I'm no uber fit slim toned up cyclist..
You'd rock that in an hour I reckon.

Only 3% difference between your best and worst? And how did the hills become taller on the worst, confusing lol.
I'm not sure, the internals of the hub seem pretty complicated - I took it to the bike shop opposite the cinema in Beckenham and the guy managed to get it to work briefly, but from what he told me it's usually a case of "once they're knackered, they cannot be fixed". To be completely honest, I just want to get rid of it and get the space back in the garage, but it'd probably be too much hassle to try to sell it.I'd have at least a brake at the front, preferably both. I can't safely pull mine up from cruising speed using leg power alone.
Saundie, is there any way of locking up the gears inside, as in weld it up or fill it with resin? Choose one ratio and then you can use the hub brake and keep the freewheel.
Headwind and/or less fitness?
I would expect a much bigger difference than 3%. The ascent and descent is higher on the second which shouldn't be affected by the wind as I imagine it uses an altimeter.
She can't get it delivered to another store unfortunately and getting it delivered here and then to you would be faff/costly.
