I'll just hijack this thread to ask some advice. I've got a Trek Soho 2008. I converted it to a rough and ready singlespeed, which has been great, however the bearings have gone in the bb. It's a commuter bike and I don't take the best of care of it!

I was looking to get just a single ring up front (same tooth number as the middle ring) and new cranks. Can anyone suggest a cheap and easy replacement that I could do myself?

How about an SRAM S100 1.1 crankset with a gxp bb? Will be 48t though.

You can probably get the lot for £70.

That's based on it being an external bottom bracket. You might also need to borrow a bb removal tool if you don't already have one.

Just back from a little 8 mile ride, i was targeting a small time trail section on Strava, managed to get 3rd! although 1st and 2nd place are shared on the same time so i guess in 2nd really:p

The top two places are pretty pro guys, i know one and funny enough bumped into the other guy tonight!

Going to try it again when im fresh because i was feeling pretty sluggish from my workout yesterday

Just back from doing 20 miles. Would have had to be much less if I'd not got my lights on.

I went through one of those speed readout things and it clocked me at 18mph on the flat. Quite pleased about that, haha.

How much protein do you guys eat on an average day?
I've realized that while I've quite a lot of carbs (pasta etc) in my diet there's very little protein!

Do you normally just have chicken/meat with every meal or do you eat a kilo of tofu every lunchtime?

Fellas, my back wheel makes a huge squeal when braking. Any idea what is cashing this and how to remedy this?

Also, my non drive side crank arm seems to cause a big vibration and noise when standing up on the pedals. Any idea what is causing this or what I could do to check it over.

You can angle the pads so the most rear part of the pads touch the rim first :)

In non-Lance news... Who has cycling/bike insurance? My home insurance won't cover bikes unless I pay loads, and dedicated cycling insurance looks a better bet in terms of what I get for the money anyway. Who are the good providers? What are the excesses like on bike insurance?

Ta.

Your home insurance provider is crap then. Get a quote from Hiscox. My bikes are covered any where in the World, regardless of what happens to them. Added £30 or so to my premium.

I did my first ever commute into work yesterday, its 15km and 49 mins in and 40 mins back - quite pleased given that im on a heavy ol mtb with full off road tyres!

I need to get my road bike sorted, im leaning to the Ribble again esp as Halfords seem to have put their prices up.

I had my bike insured with ETA for a replacement cost of £1100 - the premium was £108 a year. I decided not to renew it and do as George suggested; I changed my contents insurer to one that would cover the bikes, and then cancelled the separate policy.

That £108 included 3rd party insurance and also their cycle recovery scheme, whereby if you have a mechanical problem with the bike more than 5 miles from home, you can call them and get them to pick up you and the bike and get you home. This was the main appeal for me, as I had aspirations of doing a tour around Britain, but it never happened. As I don't really go much more than 15 miles from home I decided it wasn't worth the cost.

Some good news for me this morning; Evans have started putting my bike together, so with any luck I should get it next week. Quite looking forward to the novelty of having a new bike to play with :)
